alternator problem, need help

alternator won't charge. don't know if it's bad wireing or bad alternator. does anybody knows the troubleshoot procedure. i do have a multimeter but dont' know how to test it. if anynody could help that be great.
Just test the battery as normal. Set the meter on Volts dc (a solid line over a dashed line-maybe the other way). Put the red test lead on pos and black test lead on neg. You should have around 12 volts. Then start the car and do the test again. You should have around 14 volts. If it's still around 12 volts then its probably a dead alternator. Also make sure the ground wire on the top is connected and the plug in the side is connected.

what do you mean by top ground and side wire? on the alternator? i know there is some kind of plug that hooks up with the alternator. where is the ground?
