Will an alternator smoke if its gone bad?

 

lol. i've only had them spark at me while bench testing them, never had any smoke before though! but if yours is smoking, id say its bad!

 

i'm wondering WILL they smoke and CAN they even.

 

i'm sure they could if you put a large enough load on them. i've tested my fair share of alternators on the vehicle and on the bench test and i've only seen em spark, not smoke. i've smoked a few starters though!
