After driving my car for a short time I can smell a burning smell coming from the engine bay. It smells like an electrical burning. It does not smell when im just idling. I can not be sure but I think its coming from around the alternator.

The belt from the alternator has been making a hissing sound for quite some time and has recently got louder, but the smell has only just developed so do not think this is related.

there is no sign of smoke and the car is running fine. I have no trouble starting it up so the alternator is still working mint.

Any ideas where the smell is coming from? Alternator arching out maybe?

Thanks for the response's everyone. It has taking me 3 long days of hiking through hail and snow to get home. I was driving out in the desolate lands of the southern alps when my engine blew up. Turns out that my trodium transjuncter was reacting badly with the soap suds I put in my window cleaning water. This explains the burning smell. My car is now well and truly dead. All I have left is a jar of her ashes. I guess im kind of lucky in a way though.... had it not blown up in to a ball of flames I surely would have frozen to death.
