Default air filter off another car

Has anyone tried to use an air filter off of another car? Like, I know a DSM filter is the same shape as the one I have and I think its a little bigger. Has anyone else thought of this? I don't want to just go up to autozone and start opening boxes.

No problem whatsoever. Just make sure it has similar (or more) surface area than your stock part, and that it seals fully. People do this all the time.

Well, everyone seems to like K&N, though I don't know how much "better" they are. What I don't care for is how they advertise their's has less air resistance. Well duh, anyone can make an air filter with low resistance just by having no filtering. Anyway, they seem to be the most popular.

Oops, sorry, I guess I'm not being clear. I'm not talking about a specific brand, just a filter off of another car. Like a cone filter with a 2.5 or 3 inch opening thats just a bigger filter with more surface area.

Nope, what you said first is what you have to do, go through all the boxes. Kind of fun actually...
