Default aem gears slipped ....... is this common?

well a buddy of mine has just fried his cylinder head...
cam gears slippeed and did some serious damage.. cam shifted and bent all his exhaust valves

these were aem cam gears....
any other input of which companies are known for having this problem

i don't think it was a faulty install because everything was tightened to spec....

were all the bolts tight? did it turn from the adjustment part or the center that is suspose to have a key in it to prevent slipping?

What style bolts were on the old allen key bolts or the newer hex bolts. The hex ones are supposed to be better.

I had some TODA gears slip, that was my fault, but they only allow for 5 degrees adjustment so I did no damage. Got lucky I guess.

I have heard of people having problems with AEM gears though. I cant remember if it was for them slipping or the bolts stripping.

The AEM's are notorious to slip since they only have 3 bolts holding it secure. Thats why most people opt for skunks since they have 6. DOwnside to skunk2 is that they timing marks are off just a tad. but a good dynoman wouldnt even use timing marks.

i am not going to slander a company and say that they slip often, when i myself have not used their cam gears personally.

...but your not the first one this has happened to

Its more likely to happen with the fewer bolts, but some of the time its due to improper tight down and lack of using loctite.

Any cam gear can slip. The reason is 99% installation error. I had AEM's for over 2 years and NEVER had a problem.

Another AEM product failure?

I'm sooooo surprised [sarcasm].

There was one point where ENDYNE didn't have their cam gears in stock, and the "replacement" that they recommended was Skunk2.

last monday i was goin out for a drive, thank god i was 2 houses down....
anyway i heard what seemed to be a loud explosion and some pinging and tapping for a second or 2, which i obviously didnt like, and my car died on me.... well after noting that my intake cam gear slipped and bent, well i believe bent all valves, but theres no compression in 1,2, and 3 cyl... the damn cam gears were tq'd to either 8 or 15... 1 of them being the spec... or if it wasnt that, then it was tq'd to the spec of aem and they still crapped out on me...
i dont care though, its winter time, car would be off the road anyway.... new valves, retainers, and 8.8:1 c/r knockers
still cant believe 5 mph and like 1.5k rpm.... thank god no piston damage though, even though there comin out... back to stock sprockets for me

If the pulley incorporates a locking-pin, there is virtually no way it can slip once it's set.

this is why aem requires you to use locktight after any adjustment

Iv'e seen a lot of aluminum gears slip because someone over tightened them and they stripped the al. Torque them to spec and you will be alright. If you over torque them hoping they won't slip you will just damage the al an the bolts will loosen. I have had aem gears for 3 years now I have or 300 dyno pulls on them with lots of adjustments no problems
