advance timing?
ok here is the deal......why do chips feel it nessesary to advance the hell out of the timing at wot? i was always shown that retarding the timing helps at higher rpms, weather it be a car engine a motorcycle, a 2 stroke engine, whatever.....
So why does my chip make me have 40+ degrees of advanced total timing at wot?

The basic philosophy behind it is kind of hard to just explain, but let me try. There are two ways to get more horsepower out of ignition timing. One is: As the piston goes up on the compression stroke, ignite early to give a jumpstart on combustion so that when the piston passess TDC the mixture will: be at the point of most compression; be at the point of highest combustion energy; be reaching more complete combusion; and be able to push back down on the piston with more power. The other way is: As the piston passes TDC, then ignite the mixture so that the combustion just pushes down on the piston. Both make power, and it's true that retarding the timing should theoretically make more power, but at a significant loss of effeciency, and requiring more fuel. Advancing the timing allows you to make the most of the fuel you already have (in fact, often it helps to lean out the mixture a little more) and give clean effecient combustion which provides more power on the power stroke. Both work, but timing advance will keep an engine running cleaner for a longer period of time, and waste less gas.
Every car with an ECU advances the timing as RPM increase. This is due to the rate at which fuel is burned and the speed of the piston. The faster the piston is moving the sooner the spark needs to be initiated to maintain a good combustion event. If you want to know what your car would feel like with severely retarded ignition dial your disributor way back, not neccessarily all of the way back. This feelling you certainly don't want at high RPM, but it is a great trick for emissions testing. By-the-way, it won't hurt your engine to retard it. What you could do is retard your timing a couple of degrees if you are concerned with high RPM timing.

My main concern was running 75 shot dry kit.........they say that i need to retard 4 degrees with the 75, 2 with the 65 and 0 with the 55......now that is based on a stock ecu....so if my chipp advances even farther then what the stock one does, then that would mean i need to retard even farther right? From my first test the stock p30 has about 35 degrees advance when at wot about 7000 rpm, the chipped one i am not sure of but is way past 40.
i have a stock p30 and would run it but it is givving me code 41 regardless of what i do to try to fix it. just trying to understand the whole advancing thing......
would it not make sence tho to have it retard timing at high rpms when at wot? just my thoughts. who cares about gas usage at wot? i would rather have more in there then not enough if you ask me.
