Engine Timing FAQ
Well, in my thirst for a thorough knowledge of engines and how they work (and how to make them unreasonably fast), I have a question. Now, all I need is the answer, which is probably very extensive.
Mechanically, what exactly does "advancing/retarding the timing" mean and how does it affect all the engine's cycle?
Also, how do you adjust the timing?
Or gimme a link that explains it thoroughly. Thanx for the help...

There are lots of different types of "timing" that we can talk about. We can talk about ignition timing, camshaft timing....just remember that when we do talk about timing, we're using the crankshaft as the basis for our comparison. The timing of everything else is relative to the position of the crankshaft and (not to mention) the pistons to which the crankshaft is connected to via connecting rods.
As you get to see the big picture it'll all come into focus.
