What are you ACTUALLY adjusting when you adjust it? I know you're changing the timing but how does this work? Are you adjusting the position of the cam?

Cam timing and ignition timing are both being adjusted on the intake cam. Keep this in mind and readjust the distributor after you've adjusted the intake cam.
