Default 98 cl torque converter problem

my friends automatic 98 cl has thrown a check engine light for his torque converter. what is the next step? to fix the problem

Whats the code#? It may not be the torque converter. You really need a scan tool to monitor the tc to see if it is fully locking up

well if a shop is telling him it needs a tc then put one in it if you trust them. sounds spendy though I know are toyota ones are like 1k plus install

Are you sure it is the torque convertor.. One thing I've learned is that scan tools sometimes only point you in the right direction. It could be something else that is indirectly triggering that code.. But hey, I could be wrong.. Good Luck though..
