Default crank preperation

so I know my crank is good it came out of my motor but it has small lines in it. not anything that will catch the nail but visible. I was told my the engine builder to clean the crank bearing surfaces with scotchbrite pad. Is this possible, I read that scotchbrite pad is not good for anything internal engine related

if not is there any other way to prep the crank or should i just throw it in.

"lines" on the journals could mean many things. post a pic.

and scotchbrite won't really do much on a Honda crank except clean it. if the lines are just color marks and not actual damage of any type, scotchbrite will take it right off. if the lines are microscopic scores, as long as the journals are still in spec you can still use it but would want to polish the journals, which requires 1500/2000/2500/3000 grit sandpaper and/or emery cloth

Obviously there are many different types of Scotch Brite pads. Its important that you use the right pad for a delicate job. He probably meant the red pad but you should double check with him. Honestly if it fine enough to not need machine work then it doesn't and shouldn't need to be touched at all.

I would not bother with a scotch brite pad it's not going to do the crank any favors.

The ugly things that need attention in Honda cranks is behind the oil galley plug ball. Sludge and heavy particulates in the oil accumulate there. It's not the kind of stuff you want heading toward your bearings.

werd ill have to inspect the crank. where is the oil galley exactly. I usually just spray the oiling holes with brake cleaner.

ill get pictures of the crank soon
I have another crank that looks great but i dont want to swap out cranks since I want the bottom end all matched

so i checked the crank and the mains looked fine but whewn i washed it and ran break cleaner through the holes and whatnot I noticed the middle main surface was nasty and looked kind of wacky. I know this bearing was also on the loose side but in spec before i tore the motor apart

took a picture of it one side is good and the other side has coloration but no pitting or scratches. maybe its out of round

Are those spots in the first and last picture actually on the crank journal or a weird reflection? If those spots are on the journal then my guess is that they are signs of oxidation of the surface at some point. If you can't feel them then it's likely at a microscopic level. If you're keeping bare metal parts around without oil or corrosion inhibitors on them then that can happen. I woudn't use scotchbrite on the journals unless you're going to take the time to clean the crank inside and out. You'll leave behind a bunch of abrasive particles that can cause damage to your engine bearings.

That main journal definetely needs at the very least a proper micropolish

I can't really tell anything from pics i'd have to be there in person but even if it's not that bad, I'd get the crank micropolished for ease of mind.

the journal in that last pic looks pretty effed. definitely pitted, and micropolishing will not fix it.

ill end up getting it micro polished most likely

cut some strips of 2000 grit wetsand paper, and DRY sand it yourself. if the journals look spotless and line-free after, then you should be good to go as long as the journal diameters are within spec

I don't like to use scotchbrite on bearing services or cylinder walls it leave small particals that can cause premature wear. My automotive tech teacher said he has seen examples of it in the field. He has 35+ years experience and worked as a trouble shoot and diagnostic tech for gm and saturn .

I don't get why so many people are stuck on saying this?
it's called soap and water, and brake cleaner and paper towels or lint free cloth.

you think scotchbrite pads leave particles? what do you think cylinder boring/honing leaves? or shaving the head or block deck? or align boring? 10x worse than anything scotchbrite could leave.

Its just more difficult on removing the particles left over and there is better ways then risking it with an unclean environment. They don't use it at the place we ordered our rebuilds either. If so many people mention it the obviously there is sometimes an issue.
