2nd gear at 100mph
Ok, I was a dumbass yesterday.
I was going right around 100 and was shifting into 4th and went into 2nd! The motor competely lock up and smoke pillowed in and around my car. How much damage did I do? How can I tell what all I am going to have to replace when I take my motor out this week? Could this have messed up my head or is it just the block? The motor just clicks once, like it is trying to start but will not turn over. The motor is a B16A1 with J1 tranny.
Could this have hurt my tranny? it still shifts in and out of every gear fine.
PLEASE HELP! Any information will be greatly appreciated.
just get another a1, they are rather cheap vs. any repairs you will have to make that is for damn sure- don't try to salvage the one you have, tear it down in your free time and sell the parts off, whatever is left-
You will not know if you damaged the trans until the car is running again OR you tear it down.

I'm sorry this happened to you guys, but How on earth could you shift from 3rd to second? That sounds like more work than it should...kinda like putting the car in reverse (how you have to push it all the way over).
BTW: 100mph in 3rd!!?!??!?!?!?!???? Thats mad man! what kinda of tranny do you have?

Doesn't mean that the block or internals didn't take a beating as well. Something tells me that the rods/pistons were owned at the what, 14k rpm engine speed (assuming 100% clutch engagement). But yeah, valvetrain is typically the first to give out at overrevs

also your tranny will most likely be just fine. Did u let the clutch fully engage? I would check out the clutch when the tranny is off of the motor but i think it should be all white.

Thats what I'm thinking, you cant hit 100mph in 3rd, unless you have some bigass tires. Not trying to nit pick, it sucks what happened reguardless of the speed. You can pretty much guarantee valves are bent, if any dropped then you'll have piston damage as well....best to replace the motor at that point.

Mis-shift. The rev limiter won't help when the force from the rotating tires is transfererred to the crank via the clutch (ie mis-shift). There was an RSX-S around that hit 2nd on the 5-6 shift, and I calculated the engine speed to be in the ~16k range
(assuming no clutch slip)
Anyway, the rev limiter will prevent an engine from accelerating under it's own power, but it won't prevent it from accelerating because it's being forced.

I know that, my point was that to mis-shift from 3rd to 2nd your obviously in 3rd gear, you cant be at 100mph in third gear, thats all I was saying. Maybe a misunderstanding? s'all good.

Huh? He was "shiftinginto 4th" but hit 2nd instead, which means he was in 3rd... at 100mph. Blah13 is right.

That would be even harder to do than I previously said.

Thanks for all of the input so far guys. Well my speedo reads right at 98-100 when shifting out of 3rd gear into 4th. I would not think it would be off that much (the speedo) My tranny again is the J1.
So I am going to have to replace the head or just rebuild it. It won't be warped will it? I have CTR cams sitting in my garage that I just bought. And was getting ready to buy an entire Ferrea or Super Tech valve train . I also have N1 pistons in my garage in another block that I was going to start building.
Could there be any damage to the cylinder walls? Should I have it honed out just to be safe?
I have no clue as to how I got the car into second gear with out pulling and pushing like crazy. It just went in smooth as butter.
I do thank all of you for your help and input!
I thought about it and here is my plan tell me if I can do it. FIRST OFF I AM NOT GOING TO BUY ANOTHER MOTOR, unless I have to. I was going to start building my motor for a Full-Race turbo Stage 3 in the next year. So I am just going to start building it now. Can I use the block as long as I replace all the parts except the crank. And can I use the HEAD as long as I replace the everything except the rocker arms, and cams. I want to keep my GSR cams for the turbo instead of the CTR's. The CTR's are for my other block with the CTR pistons, CTR intake manifold, CTR Header.

I agree the motor is probably pretty well fucked. I hydro locked my motor and it bent one rod and broke another. The motor just stopped. It also would just click if you tried to start it. That is because the rod that broke was jammed up against the botom of the sleeve. I would get a long block and repair/build your old one. That is what I did with my GSR. I am glad I just got another long block cause once I opened the locked motor I knew it wasent getting repaired quickly.
By the way. I don't know about the J1 tranny but my d16z6 with a dx tranny would shift out of 3rd at about 105. The gears were so tall I never redlined 4th due to lack of power. Godd luck man and keep us posted.

did you realize that your car was in the wrong gear? i've misshifted twice but i've felt the split second when the car slows down while the synchros tries to rev match the engine speed and tranny speed and caught it in time...
in any case, since chances are you're going to have to rip out the engine, get it opened up and see maybe if you can salvage it... new pistons, etc...

He might've been shifting very quickly where he'd dump the clutch, giving him virtually no time to react to the extreme engine braking or the 10k engine speeds :/ I must admit, I've done this as well... going through the gears 1-2-3-2 type of deal, but the tach never went past 9k as indicated. You kinda feel a very noticeable braking effect and the best thing you can do after that is push the clutch in and become very very religious.
