06 Odessy valve adjustments
Hi every one, New to the site and looking for some help. I have and 06 odessy van with a v 6 V tech engine that has some ticking noise from under the valve cover. I'm sure the valves need adjusting but i heard that for the V tech engine design for the van is requiring shims to be checked. I don't know how true is this and looking for answers hasn't been easy. I know the steps for cylinder rotation but specs for valve adjustments are sketchy.. Any new's on this is great full.

by shims do you mean feeler guages? i think you do, and im not sure about that motor, but on mine you check the gap between the cam lobe and rocker arm for each valve when its fully closed. the exact distance is in a repair manual if noone on here knows offhand. oh, and from my experience you have to be pretty dead on.
feeler gauges is all u need. intake is at .22mm exhaust at .30mm. v6 can be tricky with the adjustments since there is not too much space under the hood.
you gotta work blind in a way on the back head, honda actually says in the manual to use a mirror

Thanks to civicsirebuild & ak94gsr, Thanks for the info, will get on it when the wife is not in using the van (when ever that happens) and will update to you on how its running. Again thanks, oh by the way i know about the feeler gauges but are shims still attached to it in area. Just curious?? Some guys at a part store was telling me about this before and i like to be prepared if this engine is equipped with such. If none to worry then my work will be simple.. Again thanks

Which motor do you have in the Odyssey ? does the motor have VCM or is it the standard motor ? How many miles does the motor have also ?
Unless your motor has say 100k or more then it shouldnt really need an adjustment. If you do have the VCM motor I will put my money on it that your rear head is the one making the noise and the front head is just fine.
When I was still working at the Honda dealership I had 2 Odysseys that came in with the same ticking noise. Did valve adjustments on both and both vans returned in about 10k miles with the same noise. Eventually had to change the rear heads on both the vans to get everything fixed. This problem seems to only happen on the motors that have the VCM feature. The rear head houses the mechanics for the VCM operation and I am willing to bet that the noise had something do with with it.
Good luck !
Thank you for replying PPLH8R, to quickly answer some of your questions the odessy has the V6 Vtech engine, about 78000 miles, it does have the VCM system for the engine to work on 3 cylinders for long travel and fuel efficiency. In the beginning my wife had went a bit to long with out changing the oil in time with out me knowing. After an oil change from her mechanic it didn't take long for the ticking noise to come in. My hearing isn't all to well but it does come from the engine at the top but hard to tell if it's from the rear or front maybe both??? II will check on this since i have some time in a few days to perform maintenance on the engine to properly adjust the valves and in hopes that it quiets down for a while if not longer.. Will check up on it after adjustments to see if it does ok. Will keep you posted after the holidays on how it is..
Thanks again.. and Happy Holidays
Same to all, thank you..

a two foot dowel rod makes a great 'stethoscope' for finding where noises are originating. try poking around with it and listening to the other end, always works great for me.
