Default suspension problem

Hi everyone, so a couple days ago my front left suspension started making this clicking noise that got louder each time. yesterday I popped the hood to inspect it and noticed that the inner part of the shock (tein ss) was sticking out a lot to the point the it made a dent on the hood!

today, I replaced the coilover with my old oem shock/spring so i can figure out where to fix my tein coilover.
the problem now i that it still makes a lot of noise when i go over small bumps or cracks on the road. I made sure every bolt/nut was in place before taking the road test, so i dont know whats making my suspension sound like theres something loose. I did notice that the axles boot is cracked pretty bad but i dont know if that could be the problem?

do you guys have any idea what to check next?

thanks in advance

I think he means you left one of the retaining washers out of the assembly.

Looks to be installed improperly. From what I can tell #12 IS installed but it was either installed over #8 or has pushed through #8 which is damn near impossible.

I don't think you should be able to see the #12 part if it was installed properly.

So these are Tein SS full coilovers? If you just took them out of the box and put them on and they lasted for 4 years you may be SOL because they are outside of the warranty period. Could have been a manufacturing error

I would have to agree with grumblemarc it appears number 12 was not necessarily "left out" but it could be that after 4 years it was able to wear out enough that it can now slide over the strut rod no longer preventing it from traveling completely through the top hat. My Tein Basics came with the retaining washer "welded" or mounted as one piece with the strut rod

I agree. If #12 was able to push #8 you'd have a big hole in #8.

Every time I have seen this before it was due to improper installtion.

get a close up picture of the shock now that it is removed. I would like to see what the existing white line is around the strut rud up near the bushing. if you can get a close up of that..
