Spring compressor : TOOLS simple question
I plan on doing some suspension work within the next week or so and i was thinking about spring compressers. I know i can go to autozone and rent a pair for 40 bucks for the day but the thing is im not rushing this and ill use the spring compressers for like a week or so. Heres the question:
How did you obtain spring compressers? Did you rent them? Buy them? If you bought them, where did you get them from and how much did you spend? What company would you recommend or is that not to important?
I know its a little off topic but it is kinda important. LMK... in the meantime i think ill go check out sears hardware and see what they have to offer.
Thanks H-T

I just did mine last week, rent a compressor from Kragen by first buying it at full price, then when you return they charge me $6.50 a day. So everything is all good.
autozone will rent for free. for like a day or two tho. pay the deposit and get it all back when you return it.
the problem with the autozone spring compressor is that the claws are rather thick and dont fit into the springs very well. its kinda hard to explain how to get them to work... bottom line, its not the best option, but it can work.

I used the free autozone rental policy. I even took them back and tried a different kind to get it to fit right. The deal is our stock rear springs are progressive and the coils get awefully tight. I put the claw into the middle coils then spun it up. A rubber mallet helped some too.
actually, i found that you do NOT NEED a spring compressor for the REAR STOCK springs at all. theres barely any pressure on them, you can use your own weight to get the top nut on and off.
the fronts are the only problem. so dont waste your time with the rears.

I bought mine at my local Harbor Freight tools. They are only $10.99. I have lowered approx. 15 cars with them.

Sears. $40. Why rent for $40 when you can buy for the same money? This is a good quality compressor set but the hooks are a little thick if you have wide shock bodies.

My local autozones said that the rental period was 90 days. One even said it was unrestricted completely. I keept my spring compressor for about a week & a half. Unfortunatly it didn't work. Their new design has cast metal claws that were too fat to fit between the coils. The guy said they don't carry the old stamped steel ones anymore.
I really think autozone has been making some changes. They seem to have better customer service, and even the quality of parts has really improved over the last few years. Their the only parts store around here to provide you with new hub nuts when you purchase axles, and they have lifetime warranties on almost everything. The best part is that you don't need the reciept for any warranty issue. You just give your phone #, and it's entered into the database. You can go to any autozone without any problems (in theory). Try that **** at Pep Boys...

You don't rent for $40, you just place a deposit, then get the $40 back when you return the spring compressor. Ends up being FREE
