Default Bar'd Question, but this is a good one.

I know alot about the bar'd system but there is one part I just don't understand and I forgot to ask the REF when I was there and it's about an hour away so maybe you can help me.

What does this exactly mean? * If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

My car is a certified California car. But........
I found a USDM Gsr complete motor set in Oregon.....does this mean I can't use it in California??? I'm confused..

Replacement Engines
Entire engines can be replacement parts. As with any other replacement part, the engine must be identical to the original. If the replacement block or engine is obtained without emissions equipment, all the equipment from the original engine must be installed on the replacement block. If the engine is not identical to the original then it is not a replacement part, instead it is considered an engine change.Engine changes are a modification that must meet certain requirements to be legal (please see "Engine Changes").

Japanese Replacement Engines
Used engines imported from Japan can be used as replacement engines as long as the engine being used has been identified as functionally identical to the original engine. Please refer to the engine importers catalogue to determine if a replacement engine is legal for installation in your vehicle.

Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:

* The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
* The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
* If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
* All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.
* Vehicles converted to 100% electric drive, with all power supplied by on-board batteries are considered in compliance with the engine change requirements. All fuel system components must be removed prior to inspection. For additional information contact the ARB helpline at (800) 242-4450

After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine.

I would like to know where you got your info from that says that it is legal to bar a jdm motor because i sure in hell cant find it in writing

it means that all the "CALIFORNIA EMISSION COMPONENTS" must be intact. mainly a cali legal cat, california issued ECU, and matching emission components (o2 sensors).

you can still use it, just make it resemble (emission wise) the del sol B16A3 motor.

Yep. Thats right you should be able to get it smogged. Basically what all that wordy stuff says is that you have to have all the "emissions and electronics" identical to what the engine had in the car it was in originally in. But there is wiggle room as far as what year the engine actually came from. All that really matters is the electrons match the year and car that your "trying" to get it smogged as. So like i have a jdm gsr b18c but I smog it as a 98 gsr b18c1 because thats the year that the computer and electronics came from actually but the motor is a 96 but that matters less than the actual electronics...

Going to the REF today and asking some questions. I know this is a beat subject, variation is a bitch lol. I will tell you what I find. And I will find out if Rywire harness's can pass the REF as well. Wish me luck!
