ok i got this problem and dont know how to put the springs on for the catalytic converter..do any 1 know how much i need to torque it down or its just bolts on? thanks lmk asap im running open headers right now

You're technically not tightening the springs. If you look at the bolt. it has a shoulder on it, in addition to the head. Basically the shoulder at 'bottom' (opposite the head) of the bolt will snug up to the header. On a B16 I think the torque for the bolt is 16Nm. So the bolt basically becomes 'fixed' to the header. The spring's job is to push the cat onto the header gasket.

 

well i tryed puttin the bolt and the springs together so i can tighten it with the nut but i think i need to compress the springs somehow because it wont go through so i can put the nut through the back..

say..i got a dc sport header for a 92 civic hatch..and im tryna connect the end of the headers to the catalytic converter..do i still need the springs that was stuck with the bolt?

 

yeah, it sorta takes 3 hands. If your cat is sitting a bit loose, it sometimes helps to use a bungee cord to hold it up, or worse, duct tape it. Just make sure to remove it when you're done

Anyway, with the two stuck on each other take the bolt, put the spring on it, then insert the bolt end through the cat side towards the header hole. It'll probably not go far enough to screw the nut on at this point. Now compress the spring slightly and push the bolt through the header hole far enough to get the nut on. screw the nut on so that the head of the nut sorta sits flush with the bolt. Now repeat on the other side. Now, go back and forth 2-3 times, tightening both bolts down semi-equally. That way your cat-header isn't totally tweaked and you don't butcher your gasket as you tighten it down. Eventually the bolt shoulder will bottom out on the header. the spring should be mostly compressed, but not tight. If it's tight you have the wrong bolt. The OEM bolts for the muffler expansion joint are shorter than those for the header expansion joint.

It's usually a good idea to have two people..

I always get someone to compress the spring with some long *** needle nosepliars
