Default difference between Type R and GSR blocks

I have a 00 Si and was considering swapping a 1.8L shortblock into my car. I know that the GSR block is girdled at the bottom end, comes with a forged crank and rods from the factory and runs slightly lower compression than the type R. I know that the Type R block has a similar layout but uses lighter weight, friction coated, higher compression pistons, but is that the only real difference? I'm just trying to decide if there's an advantage to going with the type R bottom end vs the GSR block. I'll be using my stock B16 head which already uses Type R valvetrain etc (look at my mods in my sig). I've looked at the FAQ's already but never saw anything that answered my question. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The bare blocks themselves are identical. The differences are in the internals. The ITR crank is heavier (more counterweights), the ITR rods are balanced and the pistons as you have said are coated and have higher domes for compression. There is no advantage to use a ITR block if you are going to build it, except its B18C5 y0!

Above is correct.

I just purchased a B18C5 because I wanted the crank, but swapped the pistons to CTR.

PS don't forget you will need a different/taller header because the deck height is different.

Probably around 10 to 15 grams heavier.

The B18C5 engine has these notable differences done to it:

1)Single porting of the intake manifold (until 98, then done by machine)
2)Air Intake Diameter - 70mm (GSR - 65mm)
3)Throttle Body Diameter - 62mm (GSR - 60mm)
4)Valve Seat Opening Angle
5)Straightening of the Intake
6)Relocation of Intake to inside of fender
7)Exhaust Pipe Diameter - 57.2mm (GSR - 50.8mm)
8)Tailpipe Diameter - 76mm (GSR - 50.8mm)
9)Modified Exhaust Pipes
10)Enlarged Silencer
11)100% Stainless Steal Exhaust System
12)Light Weight Inlet Valves
13)High Lift Valve Springs
14)Lower Friction Pistons
15)Molybdenum Coated Piston Skirts
16)Light-Weight Reinforced Piston Rods
17)Full Balanced 8 Weight Crank Shaft
18)Hand Buffed Valve Seats (until 98, then done by machine)
19)Hand Buffed Valve ports (until 98, then done by machine)
20)Conrod bolts torqued using a Micrometer Wrench

There are a total of 60 different parts in the Type R engine. If anyone wants to add to the list, feel free.

(list from Honda Motor Co., Japan)

Nice list. Most of those, however pertain to the head.

Do the GSR and ITR blocks come with forged rods and crank from the factory? Hmm...didn't think the LS block did, but do the GSR and ITR?

The LS crank is forged but the rods are not. From what I read somewhere, all Honda cranks were forged but only the rods in the B18C's were forged.

I didn't know that...I always thought the Type R pistons were lighter.. Thanks for all the replies guys...I appreciate it! good info too.

The only reason they are lighter is because they have less dome displacement.

I think replacement blocks are just stamped "B18C" but don't hold me to that.
