Default 94 auto ex...........use like a tiptronic(sorta)??

i noticed on my auto that you can go from d1 to d2 to d3 to d4 w/o pressing the *** in. on my dads 2000 tl you can use the tiptronic or use 1-2-3-4-5. i was wondering if it would work like a tiptronic(sorta)? is the computer capable of doing such a thing?

Yeah, I have a '94 ex auto as well and yes you can shift it manually without any problems. If you look in your owner's manual it even says you can do this, shift it manually without the use of a clutch. Not the same as a manual mind you, but it's as close to a manual you will get with an automatic. Also to clarify, it's 1st, 2nd, D3 and D4. 1st and 2nd are independent. Meaning if it's in either gear it will stay in that gear unless you shift it. D3 will shift in the first 3 gears (1,2,3). D4 will shift all the gears. Similar to a tiptronic but not exactly the same. It is faster to shift it on your own though and it will allow you to go into the redline which the auto mode won't, though I don't recommend it.

There's nothing wrong with doing it. I've been doing it for 50K + miles and have never had a problem with the tranny.

yea mess up a couple of times and the tranny gets weakened pretty easily tho. a buddy of mines lost it gear by gear... he lost the reverese, 1st gear, 2nd gear...and the rest was history after that. then soon after...the whole car got stolen while it was at the shop get a new tranny. very very f'd up. =\ its cool tho. gsr-t now hehe yesss i really wouldn't recommend it either.

Hmm...interesting. Though I don't really see what there is to mess up. Unless you simply forget to shift. Oh well...I've never had a problem. Up to the individual in the end.

Yes, you can manually shift the auto tranny but it's never recommended unless you using it to engine brake for step inclines and such. You can wear out an autotranny prematurely by manually shifting it like a tiptronic or standard. The hardware internally was not designed to be frequently shifted. Just cuz you can do it doesn't mean you should

You mean manually right? Because even if you are not shifting manually the tranny still shifts gears for you. So if we stick with your original comment, that would mean it's not a good idea to shift at all, including the tranny shifting for itself (in D3 or D4)...but I'm sure you meant manually.

i use to manually shift my auto mustang a couple times when i had it. of course my main purpose of doing that was to stay in 1st and **** my friend off by getting up to around 4000 and start mashing the gas, letting off, mashing the gas, letting off, mashing the gas... oh man, it was good times... specially when i did it in the middle of a intersection with tons of cars lookin at me, but none where behind me, so no chance of an accident or anything. i highly recommend you do this to ur friends if you think your car is a piece of **** and couldnt care less... its like a roller coaster ride

Sometimes you can't always get what you want. So make the best out of what you've got.

shitty... i was thinkin that was it, but you know, im a manual nut and couldnt grasp the idea of wanting an auto over a manual... even in heavy traffic... cuz you know those times in the country with all the twists and no traffic happens, and ur ready for it with ur trusty manual
