Default Looking to do a Y7/Y8 combo

Current Setup

1988 CRX DX
Stock Block - 157k
Stock Head - Si Cam
Y8 intake manifold
H/I/E

15.3@90 mph

MY dilemma is, im bored with it, and now my si tranny is losing 1st gear, and its grinding into 2nd.

I have a spare Si tranny with app. 230k miles on it, stock, daily driven. Is there any way you can inspect a tranny rather than dropping it in and hoping it works out?

Also, I have a Y7 block with 40k, and a Y8 head with 80k , there not together yet. My friend did the head swap, messed it up, then had it redone "professionally" and then i got the motor for 200 bucks, pulled the head in attempt to put it on my dx block, and now i wanna drop in the whole motor. Heres the thing, there seems to be signs of piston damage, becasue there are some indented rings on there, almost like there was some knocking. What are my options for pistons for the y7, with a y8 headgasket, y8 head.???? id like to have a nice high compression.

Im considering bolting up the spare si tranny, to the y7/y8 setup, with msd rpm switch, stage 2 clutch, HF flywheel, staying obdo with PG7, but considering to convert to obd1.

need opinions, experience, etc, thanks, dave

honestly, it'd probably be quicker to put in the other tranny to see if it works than disecting the whole thing to see if there is anything wrong with it. There is probably over 300 pieces to that tranny and even if you did get it open and start taking parts out of it....do you even know what you are looking for?
it'd take you less than a day to take out ur current tranny, swap in the other one, if you didn't like it, then swap back your old one..
if your 1st n second gear are going in ur current tranny...then that sounds to me like any tranny would be better than that one right now.

about the mini-me...I might suggest if ur current dx block is running good now, swapping the y8 head onto that. I've done that swap in a 93 hatch and killed gsr's with only bolt ons to the mini me.
sorry don't know much (experience wise) with the y8/y7 combo...but a search might yield some more answers.

yea, im considering it for the time being, to just swap on the y8 head, but the way i figure, if im gonna pop on the spare trans, then i want to pull the whole thing, and have the other trannny already bolted up to the y7/y8. also the y7 is 1.6l, the dx is 1.5

I'm pretty sure Dohc ZC and 88-89 Integra pistons fit in the Y7. That'll bump your compression pretty high (because of the higher dome I've heard). Y8's are nice because the obd0 dizzy's fit perfect on them to stay obd0. If I'm wrong in any way, then I'm pretty sure an expert will correct me!

thats what i hear, if i decided to do the pistons, im wondering what headgasket setup i should use to avoid knocking. i belive the y8 headgasket consists of 3 separate layers that i already bought.

i read that the p29 pistons in a d15 doesnt work with a vtec head, but what is the y7 block considered, expertise needed!!!!

Y8/Y7 w/ 3 layer y8 head gasket: 9.5:1 compression
Y8/B2 w 3 layer y8 head gasket: 10.5:1 compression

as you can see, using a y8 head on a b2 block will yield you alot higher compression without swapping pistons. add a 2-layer gasket into the mix and you're running a 10.7:1 or so compression.

these calculations are from the dseries compression calculator:

hmmmm mini me it is!!! i want the highest compression possible, and the ol' dx block is stil pulling hard. I just hit 110 on a back road and it didnt even feel like it took long... its definitely pulling hard for that engine, so i mean, with the y8 head, 2 gaskets like u said, mmmmm high-14's comein my way... ill be sure to post my track times, and im also considering doing the tranny swap as well. thanks
