How do I verify if valve stem seals are bad, without pulling the head?
background info: The head I have came off a boosted car.
I'm pretty sure turbos are hard on valve stem seals.
If you're burning oil but not losing compression would this hurt you making power? I would think but would like the experts' opinions. Thanks

Get an air line with an end that will screw into the spark plug hole and.... Ah **** IM if ya wanna know the rest on how to do it. It's alot of explaining
It would be informative to the other honda tech guys if you write it here, otherwise i'll just copy what you wrote in your im and paste it on here so others can learn.
i not too familiar with turbo or force induction and the effect it has on heads..as far as N/A..you can usually tell if the valve stem seals are bad if...
when you first start up you see a little plume of smoke then goes away...usually the oil leaks throught the seals after sitting for awhile...
if you are planning on replacing(very easy job) i rec. using the exhaust valve seals on both intake and exhaust..they are better quality and can hold up to heat better than the intake side..from my expirience..

Hey man, just come over to my house and we'll pull and head and find out what the deal is. Hit me up with an e-mail
sounds good. how long did it take ya to replace them? did you notice when under full throttle you would blow some smoke out the tailpipe?
no..not with any n/a setup ive had..usually when you see smoke..blueish smoke...under heavy load..more than likely its rings...

appreciate the offer realtype R but I don't want to pull the head if I don't have to. Don't wanna spend the cash for the headgasket, and the down time waiting for it.
I want to changem out with the head on the car. I know the only way to know for sure is to pull the head. *thinking*

n..first do a compression check...if it is good..you can hunt down the leaky seal..
if bad compression..do a leak down test to find where the leak in compression is...

**** man, it takes like an hour to pull the head, I live right by UCF. I'll invite some fellow racers over and provide the beer.
I would say my way but it's really complicated to explain and prolly no easier to understand. I'll try to figure somethin out to help.... Grrrr

yea i have the same problem u are experiencing. When i give it full throttle clouds of smoke spit out of my exhaust pipe, and under normal driving there is no trace of smoke. i did a compression test and it was like 225 across all 4 cylinder, so i was told it was worn out valve stem seals and valve guides instead of rings. So i guess when im done with finals this week im gonna take off my head and send it to a machine shop to replace the seals and guides.
