Default speedometer issues

hey all,

I have a '94 CX with 205,000+/- miles on it. It runs, rides and sounds like a new civic, but I'm having issues with the speedometer. In the morning, after about 10 minutes on the freeway (usually morning trips only) the speedo drops to 0mph, and stays there until the car comes to a complete stop, or sometimes it has to sit while I'm at work to come back to life. I've replaced the speed sensor to the tune of $100, which made no difference, and dont' want to make another pricey mistake. Has anyone had a problem similar to this, and what should I check next?

Thanks,
Andy

I don't specifically recall about 94s but one wire from the vss goes to the ecm. You may want to check that wire and the connections.

it happened to me before,

could me speed sensor
wirings
cluster
etc.

my problem was the speedo gauge itself

so i took my gauge cluster out and took the speedo out and replaced it.

then bam work like new.

if you need a speedo i have an extra and can sell you it

Do any of you guys get a CEL when this happens. My speedo works fine, but twice now when I have driven in the rain, the speedo has stopped working. Maybe just a coincidence but it only happened on rainy days. Also I've driven in rain without any problems either. First time, speedo stopped working, I got no CEL, but yesterday, I got a CEL after my speedo stopped working. I let the car sit the whole day, went to go drive and everything was fine for about ten minutes, then speedo stopped working and CEL came on a little bit later. Have not had time to check CEL code.

What could be wrong? Its a 94DX.
Just wondering if you guys got any CEL with your speedo issues.

Okay The code you are getting is more then likely a VSS code. They come and go. Apperantly The gauge cluster works off of magnetic pulses. So if you gauge panel does not work just reset the needles to zero and let it sit unconnected for a while. As for the VSS sheck the input from the wire. I have directions for this at my dads when I go there the next time I will post them up.

man theres alot of these threads around...lol

I have the same problem but really had no time to deal with the issue, but I do believe its the actual cluster itself in my case.

I think the speedo problem with the 5th gens should go up in the FAQ thread.

Good Luck!

Actually can't check CEL like evilthorne said. If I restart the car the CEL is gone. Actually drove to work, no speedo, but no CEL either.

Well, I think it was the wiring on the back of the cluster. I spent a bit of time last night tightening everything while I had the dash apart, and this morning went off without a hitch, 75-80mph all the way to work, and needle siesures to deal with. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Andy.
