Default grind and rattle while driving

Hi everyone.

I have a 96 Civic LX 5 speed (sedan). There's an annoying rattle at about 3k rpms in third and fourth gear. It might be in the other gears, but I haven't really noticed it. This is while cruising - if accelerating, the noise is pretty much gone. If I push the clutch pedal, the noise also disappears (probably because the rpms drop).

Also, when shifting, there is a slight grind/rattle noise. It's a metallic sound, a bit difficult to describe. The sound comes from the front of the car when I push in the clutch and the rpms begin to drop - it doesn't happen when I change gear and let go of the clutch pedal.

Any idea what this might be? Aside from these annoyances and being embarassed from the rattling noise when cruising in third and fourth gears, I like this car a lot. I think I'm getting 30+ mpg city on regular fuel, and best of all - it has 225k miles on original motor, transmission, clutch, flywheel Hondas are great.

Thanks,
-Brian.

check your whole exhaust piping and tighten every bolt from the header to the axle back. i used to have that problem with my car but it went away after i tightened it.

Sounds like it could be the infamous input shaft bearing... here's a link on how to fix your woes.

Thanks guys.

I'll check out the exhaust first. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Otherwise, I guess I'll just go ahead and get the trans pulled, and replace all the wear & tear parts while it's down.

Thanks,
-Brian.

Can you elaborate a little more? I'm just curious as to how it might be the front bumper support. It could make sense, since my front bumper is a little messed up from sliding into a pole (bumper and headlight was damaged). Would it be rubbing against something?

Thanks,
-Brian.
