So my dad has 08 fit, 5 spd, with about 130k on it. Never had anything besides regular maintence done to it and it's really been a great car. The other day, he calls me asking about a rattle or grinding noise when he is driving.

It didn't make the noise when it was cold, as he drove about 10-15 miles it started to make a noise so he took it to the car wash hoping the noise was caused by ice on it. That didn't help but as the day went on it got better so he drove it to where I work and I took it for a drive.

When you start out in first, if the clutch is let out rather fast it makes almost a banging/grinding noise and as you accelerate through the gear it makes a fairly loud moan. It gets quieter with each gear it's just like the faster/harder it is accelerating the louder the moan is. Also if you drop the clutch rather fast when you are shifting it makes an awkard "clack" when it engages and goes about the moan through the rpm range. It only moans if you are really accelerating hard, steady state driving creates almost no noise. He does plan on taking it to the dealer just thought I'd ask here first any input is greatly appreciated!

 

Bad clutch and throwout bearing. Car did good to go 130,000 without a change.
