Default found out the hard way that a OEM GSR header is longer then a DC 4-1 GSR header

Hey guys,

I just got done installing my DC sports GSR 4-1 header (94-99). And like the topic says I found out the hard way that it was shorter then a stock 95 GSR header. Even after I repeatedly asked the sales clerk if it was the same length as a 94-95 OEM GSR header. He kept saying "yes it is the same length, except it has no O2 sensor bung". He did say that the 00-01 GSR 4-1 header was a little longer then the 94-99 and the 00+ also had an O2 bung on it.

Does anyone know if this is true about the 00+ 4-1 header being longer?

I guess if I had gone with the 00+ GSR 4-1 and my GSR cat my exhaust would have been ok. But now with the 94-99 GSR 4-1 header and the GSR cat, I am still short by about 3-4 inches. I was also thinking about just getting a local muffler shop to make me a 3-4" removeable extension. Do you guys think it would be cheaper to get that done or should I just get them to extend my cat 3-4 inches?

Thanks

oh yah, one other thing I noticed when driving the car home. I couldn't connect the rear section of my Greddy SP2 to the cat, so I had to drive it home this way. All I had were the header, stock 18" GSR cat, and the first section of the Greddy SP2 with the resonator.

When I installed the motor I noticed that the motor would die when coming to a stop. When I was braking the RPMs would drop too low sometimes too low and the car would die. If I was going fast enough, I would put it in gear and pop the clutch to start it. Or I could prevent it from dieing by blipping the throttle as I braked. But enough about that, I've been trying to find the cause of this problem which only happens when the motor is fully warmed up. It probably has something to do with my FITV or IACV, or maybe because my TPS isn't calibrated yet.

Anyways, the problem wasn't as bad when I tightened the adjustment screw on the TB. But today I notcied the problem was a lot worse when I rode the car home with just the header, cat and resonator section (no muffler or middle ecatback section). Does that give you guys any hints as to what could be causing my idle problem? how could the lack of a muffler make the idle problem worse?

Thanks again

It would probably be cheaper to extend your cat. But it would be less reversible should you want to go back to the stock manifold/downpipe (say, for a smog check).

Yah, I was thinking along the same lines as you are, but I wasn't worried about smog, but about selling the cat. I could sell it for $75-$100, but if I get it extended then that narrows down who I can sell it to. For smog I have the OEM GSR header which I will be keeping as well as my stock 15" DX cat. That setup bolts right up with no modifications to anything.

I was thinking about just going to the muffler shop and have them weld 2 flanges to a 3" section of 2.25" pipe. I can stick this between the resonator section of my Greddy SP2 and the section that bends around and goes to the muffler. (did that make sense?)

Oh yah,

In case anybody cares, I measured ground clearance with my tape measure and it was 4 inches from the lowest part of the header to the ground. I have a B18C, HCP mounts, stock springs and shocks and 205/45/16 rims/tires.

I wonder how long it will be till I dent it.

why would you waste money on that header :D if you spent money on a b18c.. why not cough more money out for a real header ..

I was getting tired of the stock GSR header, and the GSR 4-1 was available and inexpensive. I wanted to get a Comptech header, but I dont know if that would have worked with a stock front crossmember. I was able to pick this one up from a shop about 20 minutes away too. And since I ordered a chipped P28 from Kenji yesterday I figured I would get a header and test pipe to go with it.

Sometime in the future after I have a aftermarket front crossmember I might get an AN-R or a Bisimoto header and full 2.5" exhaust custom made. For now the GSR 4-1 will do.

I just got back from the muffler shop and I had them make me up a 2" long extension that bolts between my Greddy SP2 resonator section and the middle curvy section. Now that the car is not so loud I can hear my HCP adjustable shift linkage extension rattling against my GSR cat. I'll have to fix that by splitting some large diameter vacuum hose and tie-wrapping it to the extension rod so there is no metal to metal contact.
