Default Transmission Help Please.

ive been having some problems with my tranny for a 00 Civic Si. whenever i try to downshift from 4th to 3rd i cant push it in, no matter how hard i push it. i tried everything pushing down my clutch and trying to let the RPM's drop but it wont work. i believe it could be the syncro's because when it did work it would grind when i upshift and downshift into 3rd gear. if anybody could help please let me know.. thanks

Are you implying in the line about "pushing down my clutch and trying to let the RPM's drop?" to mean that normally when you downshifted you didnt use the clutch? you just did a clutchless downshift? cause if thats the case and it was grinding as you did it youve no doubt done serious damage to your tranny, be it synchros or even worse the teeth on the gears themselves.

Also has the transmission fluid ever been changed?

Double-clutching and rev-matching are going to be your best bet until you get it fixed. Don't force it into gear, it can only make things worse.

I've got a VERY similar problem with my YS1 transmission. When I rebuilt it, all the syncros and shifter forks looked OK. However;

It's slow shifting up from second into third (I could live with it), however the downshift of fourth to third doesn't seem to exist!!! It's as if the "gate" isn't there (regardless of pressure on the shifter). If I "touch" second gear, then I can shift into third. It's not a matter of grinding, it's as if the gate just went away.

I talked to one of the guys at Gear-Speed and they said it's a fairly common problem and could be the "slider" that goes between third and fourth, or the shift fork.

If it's the slider, then you have to buy new ones from Honda, along with the gears due to how Honda sells them. This gets pricey!!!!

I'm going to send a IM to GearSpeedEF9 and see if he can add more (or correct anything I've said that is wrong)

i had the same exact problem before my tranny went out on me. when i pulled the tranny out and opened the casing, it ended up being partly because the synchro was worn and the shift selector had broke. i just bought a new tranny cuz i wasnt about to deal with that ****.

Anothersickhatch;

I don't understand how you could have had the same problem if your shift selector (fork) was "broke". It would seem to me that if the shift fork was broken, then you also wouldn't be able to shift into fourth gear.

Now, I could understand if the shift fork was worn so that it wasn't as thick as it should be. Then it wouldn't be able to push the gear selector as much as would be required.

Any additional information would be nice.

well wes,

i had the same exact problem BEFORE my transmission COMPLETELY went out on me. i had the same trouble putting the transmission into third gear. finally, after months of this problem, my shift selector fork went out. i realized this problem one day on the freeway when i could move my shifter around in circles with the clutch out.

i am just guessing at the problem, since my shift selector fork eventually broke into pieces. now since this guy is having the same problem as i had before the shift selector fork problem, im guessing that it might have something to do with it.

Seems like you have a very worn selector set. I would also check the fork as well. Another problem is running redline fluids which tend to be a little on the thick side for Honda/Acura transmissions. We recommend using Genuine Honda MTF. That is your best bet Check it out and let me know what you need. I will be more than happy to take care of you and get you back on the road
