Default To sleeve, or not to sleeve.. that is MY question...

I've fiddling with the idea of going with a full build on my D16Y8 next year. Now I've heard alot of people going back and forth with sleeving. One group belive it's only for use with extreeme boost levels, other say if youre gonna open your motor, sleeve it! So I'm not sure what to do. I had intended on going with some Eagle rods, JE/SRP 9.0:1 pistons and the usual ARP bolt/studs, balanced crank w/ all new bearings.. and the one varaible, blockgaurd/sleeves/stock sleeves. What do you guys think? If I do go and build it, it'll be with a new turbo in mind as well. I'm thinking something like a T04E or T3/T4 hybrid boost say 8psi daily and 15+psi for track purposes. I've had friend boost 15psi in bone stock D16Z6's which lasted for a while before they succome to age, but I don't want to push my luck that far with my motor (it's my only one), so I wanna go with a standalone (AEM or Hondata) and build the motor... but do I sleeve it!???! Help?

I say sleeve it.....I know with me it seems I am never satisfied, and maybe you end up getting a standalone in the future, and want to boost up past 15psi? Well, if you got the sleeves it would be cake, if not, motor rebuild time again.

i wouldnt sleeve unless you plan to boost over 20psi
you know that sometimes,a block might crack as the sleeve gets pressed in.

sleeve/build up a spare motor...

and while ur doing that, do some very technical research on just how much psi a d16y8 can take with the proper fueling. (read: boost the crap outta it)

sleeve the motor! I dont know who has bad things with sleeved motors. But for the people who say bad stuff about a sleeved block, either they got some bad work or something. Stock sleeves will only hold about, up to 14 psi. And about sleeves crack when what? When they are pressed in? If the block cracks while the sleeves are pressed in then that not your problem its the place thats doing it. Spend the money to get Godzilla sleeves. Dont go cheap on the sleeves. Build a foundation for later, so you wont have to do it again.

the d-series blocks with rods/pistons are good to about 20psi anything more then that and you will crack the block. The stock cyl sleeves also tend to warp after a while in a boosted car.

I have heard that some sleeved d-series motors have cooling problems. So make sure you get a nice big radiator.

A sleeved d-series with rods/pistons tuned right will make 400hp or more..easy.

Thats alot of power...but you can only see that type of power on race gas. And then running 20-30psi of boost and something goes wrong..bye bye motor.

if your car is going to be a street car mostly, which i am guessing it is, save your money and swap in a b16a or b18c1. The swap might cost alittle bit more then building the motor..but 6-7psi on a b-series is like 10-12psi on a d-series. (power wise)

And most stock honda motors can do 15psi stock with good fuel management...even my old 146k mile d16z6.

12-15psi on a b-series is 300+hp! Awesome power 12psi on a d-series is like 220hp. (built or not). I have a friend with a fully built JG d16z6, full headwork, everything..monster turbo...makes 240hp @ the wheels at 14psi on pump gas. Good power but for the amount of money he spent...he would have been better with a b18c1.

My old engine, a built block d16z6, was pretty fun. I was pushing 16psi on the street on pump gas (9:1 compression via JE pistons) and it was pretty damn quick. But anymore and i would crack the cyl wall. (mine wasnt sleeved) My friend had a crvtec/turbo in a eg hatch at 7psi and he pulled on me in 3rd (i was running 12psi at the time).

Trust me..been there done that...either keep the d-series stock and have fun with them (hey dude..its cheap) or swap in a b-series if you want more power. Its just not worth the money building d-series wonder motors unless you wanna prove something.

I wish i spent the money on building my d-series on buying a b16a.
