Painting engine/tranny?
Hey guys, just a few questions hope someone can help me out. I have to yank my engine out again to fix a few things and I decided to paint it and the tranny. I was going to ask if there is any special steps I should take, and what paint to use (I was told VHT)? And also, when painting engines and trannies, do you need to use primer and/or clearcoat?
Lastly, does anyone have any pics of their painted engines and trannies? Please include color because it will help me pick! Thanks for the help in advance.

Well this is something that is done in the hot-rodding community, but who knows it could become a trend in the import scene. I think you should probably get the block and head bead blasted, the paint will adhere to that much better. I can only reccomend using paint that can withstand high heat temperatures. I would contact a hot-rodding firm to see what kinda paint and products they use on the cars they build.
Thanks I really appreciate the advice, but my questions could be answered on here as well, just due to the fact this is where I got the idea, I couldnt find them but ive seen numerous posts with painted engines, and they looked really, really good. Im also trying to find a good color to go with, and Id like to see some on import engines. I believe the "aluminum" color of VHT is the one I might want, or even the silver, but Id like to see pics of all colors. But, like I said, Id also like to know some procedures. Is beadblasting the same thing as sandblasting? Because I do have access to that.

Contact Boyd Coddington, or Chip Foose, they should be able to help you with their own procedures and give you tips on paint. I actually got a catalog in the mail today that has engine paint. As soon as I can locate it I will post the company name up for you guys. Sandblasting is very similiar to beadblasting, so that will be fine. I just use bead blast because it goes deeper.

Mikenice... I just found the catalog I got that has tons of that paint stuff for you. It is called Eastwood. The website is http://www.eastwood.com They sell tons of different colors and have all the supplies you will need to paint your block, head, and any other engine component of your choice. Hopefully this helps.
