Default GSR

I just picked up a b18 GSR block but it has no head. I want to know if b16 and b18 heads are the same? Is there any differance between the two?

They are different. The GSR head will net you higher compression, and must be used with either the GSR dual-stage or the Skunk2 intake manifold.

The B16A head uses the same casting as the Type-R head, and has the potential to flow better when modified (i.e. competition port and polish). For the intake manifold, you can use the B16, Type-R, or Skunk2 (which is a replica of the Type-R).

If you intend leave the head and the pistons stock, I'd go for the GSR head. If you plan to have head work done in the future, and plan to upgrade to higher compression pistons, then I'd go with the B16A/Type-R head.

LSVTEC 91 Civic mentioned the "poor man's Type-R" setup, which involves using a B16A head on the GSR bottom end with Type-R pistons, cams, and intake manifold - this will be almost as good as a stock B18C5 engine.

The statement about higher compression is correct. The stock GSR is about 10.1. That set-up will yield 9.8 with p72 pistons, assuming you keep the block stock. You will need b16A USDM or JDM pistons or b18C (JDM) b18C5 (USDM) pistons for higher compression.

Go here to check out the combinations:

Overall though, that set-up can be killer if done right.
