What would it take to Import a 2002 JDM RHD Type R into California?
Ok so here's the thing. We can get the car, and have the import hookup, but will it be California legal? I heard it has to pass crash tests, and SMOG, etc. Also will they allow a RHD into the State?
yeah, there is NO rule that outlaws RHD cars...
but yeah, i'm pretty sure it has to pass the crash tests, i.e.--front/left side/right side---dunno bout rear...but yeah
who's "we"

Well... first...$$$$$$$$$$.
Suggestion, if ur good... disassemble the car as best you can. You can then ship it in as a kitcar (which is VERY legal). REassemble it here, and with that they WILL NOT trouble u for crash test and all. Because ur kit is BASED ON our US RSX-S.

Doesn't someone have one in So. Cal?
man just get the car.. bring it home.. then go repo and home to find an base model RSX.. swap the numbers and you're good to go.. if a cop pulls you over for RHD tell him its a kit car.. otherwise you have to go through a ref and unless you have hookups you are screwed.. btw.. who ever is importing the car into this conuntry.. if its complete by US LAW has to sign DOT papers to indicate what the car is going to be used for, street, or race/show.. if you plan on driving and want to go through normal US regulations, the procedure is that the car will be held by US customs upon arrival and must meet all standards, i think it envolves a crash test as well.. or if its for show/race you have to fill out paperwork which will allow you to own that car for a year after a year it must be renew the license or export the car back or destroy it. If you choose not to use it on public roads you cant sell it to anyone else as the car itself is illegal. So who ever is bringing these cars in are all brough in illegally into the country.. all you really have to do is have a steady account and have a clean record as an importer with US customs in the past.. so when you bring it in, they probably indicate on the invoices that container is full of engine parts.. where the duty rate is only 2%.. when in fact a complete car is chilling in there.. and like i mentioed if an importer has a good record, when the customs broker present the paperwork to customs, most of the time they will get an electronic release and freight is good to go.. send a trucker to the pier and here comes your car.. hahah... most importers IMO are really playing around too much if they get flagged for customs exam, where the inspectors will physically go into these containers to see whats up and they find the above instead of misc car parts.. who ever is trying to bring this is in pretty much fugged up the ***.

I believe cali has some new BS law that says you can't import cars that are less than 2 years old. If I remember correctly even motorex has a hard time bringing in 01 skylines because of this rule.
Hmmm....a friend of mine in Cali drives around his S15 with no trouble. Of course he drives it very seldomly, but he hasn't been pulled over yet.
chris, why buy a 2002 itr when you can buy my car for 25g's cash....a 2008 Prototype Lex Coupe

aside, you have to work with an importer to get this done. There are established, recognized companies that import grey-market vehicles (for a fee of course). You can get most any vehicle imported into the US, and they may carry high insurance premiums or customs fees though. Try these links (the fruits of 5 minutes of "effort" by searching on the web).
