Default How to tune timing with no knock sensor or EGT gauge

We're going to be running Uberdata on a B18B with a T3/T4E w/ 60 trim. Toyosupr's equal length mani and a spearco core front mount.. we're going to be pushing the limit of the stock B18B and want to know how I can tell before the motor goes boom.

We're shooting for 350whp.. with a TiAL 35mm 9 spring w/ manual boost controller.. plan is to up the HP until we make 350 or it blows.. any suggestions/comments welcome especially on tuning the timing maps!

Wideband and a timing light.

I meant the actual timing map in uberdata.. like how far i can advance before blowing it up.

To many varibles to say.... If you are going to advance the timming that much then I would always run c16 to help avoid blowing your motor. (unless that is your ultimate goal eventually?) There was a cheap knock sensor idea floating around somewhere on here. It had to do with re wiring a microphone and adding some cord and wiring in some headphones. Total came out to like $22 bucks I think.

Good Luck

Yeah... i've read about that headphone/microphone knock sensor setup.. supposedly they used to do that back in the olden days before knock sensors existed.. any more information on that would be great!

Being that I have never tuned a full engine management I am not sure what "too advanced" is at this point... I've used AFCs AICs and BTMs .. but never messed with a true timing map before.

start conservative...then add in alittle timing the next pull. Compare the graphs. If a gain is shown, add alitle more and make another pull...Repeat this untill the gains are slim. At that point back the timing off a deg or so and your set.

umm you need both to do it right.

anything else and you're guessing on not only the tune but the longevity of your motor, be it 1 hour, 1 week, or whatever.

At the very little buy an EGT guage so you can tell if you're too far retarded (lol) or advanced. You could run your ignition retarded from stock and run race fuel and you'll see some crazy EGT's
