Default Cam Timing in relation to Ignition Timing

I'm running 12.2:1 Compression, I have some questions on Cam timing in relation to Ignition timing...

Right now my cams are set to 0/0. (I'm running a CTR intake cam and an Si exhaust cam) If I advance the intake cam 1-2 degrees, and retard the exhaust cam a degree, What exactly should be done with ignition timing since I'm running high compression. After cam adjustment, do I need to set ignition timing back to 16 BTDC? Having some idle issues. I've got the distributor advanced a little less than 1/4" past the stock timing marks on the distributor/head. At night, the car has trouble idleing at a light, it'll drop to 600RPM than stall. It seems if I advance I don't have this problem, but I can hear it ping in the 2000-4000 RPM range (especially when the engine gets hot / getting on it), when I retard timing enough to where I can't hear a ping, I can't idle with a ****. (Again, with accessories on)

I'm basically trying to find the happy medium where I have no idle issues, and no pinging. Any suggestions? I'm just trying to get it set before I can get to the dyno.

HT Members running a high compression setup? What are you running on your engines?

Only playing with the intake cam will affect your ignition timing b/c it is attatched to your distributor. Every degree of intake cam advance will advance your ignition timing 2 degrees.

If your at 16 now advancing your intake cam +2 will yield 20 degrees of ignition timing.

When you say you retard your timing to where it idles are you using a timing gun?

When you advance your intake cam +2 your probably pinging because your total timing is to advanced for pump gas. When you retard it (with or without light?) You may be bumping it back way to far and it is loping due to late/out of sync with your valve opening combustion.

Nope, I need to go to autozone tomorrow and pick one up.

That would help you out tremendously. Just for the hell of it. Retard it as you were before and when you get the gun check the timing and see what it reads. You will probably be surprised by a number like 10-11.

What timing do you recommend I run with a CR of 12.2?

Depends on the quality of gas you have at your disposal.

If you have 91 pee gas like me, then I would say start it @ 16 and move it back if it pings if it doesn't move it forward until it starts to ping and then set it 1 degree back from where it was pinging.
