Who here has broke an ats 4.9 final drive?
Under what conditions and what kind of power. I am looking into getting one but I dont want the hassle of it breaking. I have been told by a few people that they tend to break. But others say they never had a problem after 5k miles. I will be using it for autox. I put down 171 whp and 112lbs so I am not pushing gobbs of power.

I have.
mrtrex, IM rodney.
Be patient since he was racing today and is at work tomorrow but most likely may not be internet available till tomorrow night.
Mine has had No issues. With multiple track days and more than multiple autocrosses and about 15k miles.

yup
but now I'm thinking its not the final drive's fault
I believe the bearing on the counter shaft blew up first
and caused the counter shaft and final drive to misalign the teeth
any, the outcome was horrible, every tooth on the counter shaft took a ****, and half the teeth on the final drive took a ****. The transmission magnet was overwhelmed, it couldn't hold all the metal

I bet all the final drive failures are a result of the installation. Thats a big piece of steel, and it is held up properly and located correctly, it won't just break.
We have broken three ATS 4.9 Final drives! We also have a 4.75 Pro-Drive Final drive which is still running strong!
We are experimenting with the SRR 4.9 which is lasting well. We have 10 in stock... Racers price $450.00

Our final drives are installed by the best in the business... There was no assembly fault.
We're making around 216 WHP.

As in simply shearing teeth/snapping the gear or counter shaft itself or are these oiling issues? I have heard of two Housman (sp) 4.78 FDs failing due to oiling issues fwiw.

No, every time it's happened there are several teeth sheared off the ring gear and the pinion gear. On dissasembly there has been no evidence of any lack of lubrication. We have had a top metalurgist analize the gears and we found that the ATS Gears were very hard and brittle... Also a 4.95 has more teeth than the other ratios so the teeth are thinner. Any heavy jolt like jumping kerbs or allowing the car to become airbourn... Quite common in my line of work. Any kind of sudden loading on the gearbox like that is likely to snap off teeth.

i've seen a warning sheet that came w/ one of the ats fd's. i had a list of i think 4 things that must be met or failure could result. proper shimming and clearancing and something about using the right oil to keep temps down or something and something about how an lsd had to be used.
i am using a trans w/ ats fd, lsd, and oil. not sure who did the install, but it was used previously and i've used it in 4 events w/o problems...knock on wood. was putting down 230/146 on dynapack, so around 218whp.
