diff b/t coil overs and modified springs and struts?
hi..whats the main differences between coilovers and buying springs and struts?? like i want to buy the prokits with the kyb agx's but now im thinking about getting tein HA coilovers. i know theres a big difference in price but im willing to pay that difference if the performance is much better on the tein. if you guys can list the differences b/t the two set ups id appreciate it, and if anyone has either of the two set ups if you could tell me how you like it id appreciate that too..thanks in advance
springs are springs, shocks are shocks. The rates of those two components (and how well they match each other) will determine performance and ride comfort. Coilovers provide height adjustability also, in addition to pretty much ensuring that the spring rates and shock curves are decently matched.
Among some crowds, coilovers also have "bling bling" appeal.
High end autocrossers on a budget (nearly all autocrossers) who aren't staying stock class tend to go with optimum flexibility meaning coilover sleeves (you buy the shock separately) from a company like Ground Control from whom you can order custom spring rates. They also then buy a set of adjustable shocks that are easily rebuildable (such as Koni or Bilstein).
Nota bene: I am regurgitating what I have heard from others. Personally I am still in stock class, and thus have just replaced my shocks. If you aren't competing I'd say either option is fine. Coilovers allow you to raise the car in winter if you have snow or such. But they are a lot of money.
