Default Black ring on outboard CV joint, is it necessary?

#14 on both outboard joints, right behind the axle nut, it's that black ring that goes on the outboard joint and sits right up against the backside of the hub/spindle when the axle is installed on the car. Seems like on half the rebuilt axles I get, that ring is not on there.

I went to get another one today to replace the bad rebuilt I had before. The old one had that ring on there, but the one the guy brought out did not have it. I tried to get it off the old one and swap it to the new rebuilt one but I couldn't get it off. Is it really necessary to have this piece? I guess if I need it I can just order it from Acura, only about $4-$5 for a new one, but I don't want to go to the trouble if I don't need to.

I have never used the ring on my autozone axles. Never had a problem. Never knew that was supposed to be there to be honest and I have a couple of Helms sitting right in my garage.
