Default Drove to the muffler shop with open header...

...and it was loud as fock. I needed my exhaust shortened so my new 2.5 carsound would bolt up to my dc jdm 4-1. I had a old guy trying to yell at me, but I couldn't understand him. When I got there, they were booked and I have to do it again tomorrow.

My question is, I had flames shoot out the header about 3-4 times. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? My primary o2 sensor was on the header during the drive and is afraid that it has been permanently damaged.

Let me ask you, why would open header be any more or less dangerous than full exhaust? Do you think the fire you saw wouldn't have been caused if there was a cat-back on? It was just unburned exhaust igniting (aka backfire), nothing to worry about

Are you throwing a CEL for your O2 sensor? I just did my header install, and messed up mine, so I am throwing a code. Even if it is damaged, not exactly a big deal-- cheap, un-crucial part.

That's a good way of looking at, thanks.

Because I have a 2000 gsr, there are two o2 sensors. One on the header and the other on the cat. I duct taped the one going to the cat so it wasn't dangeling.

A few miles into the trip, the check engine light came on (probably because the o2 sensor in the header burned out).

Anyone else know why I could have had that backfire?

Unburnt fuel causes the backfiring/flames for the most part...same thing happened to me when i finished my swap. The header and cat didn't bolt up to old exhaust.

your check engine light came on because your secondary o2 sensor is not plugged into a cat. Your header o2 sensor is fine.

The backfiring is normal. I've driven stock cars with open header that backfire, its just harder to hear with a full exhaust on. Don't worry about a thing, you're fine.

The closed-loop oxygen sensor feedback is trying to compensate for an incurable lean condition by adding fuel. Reset the ECU frequently and maybe it'll help a little.

I've driven around for part of a day open header with the wideband installed. The wideband would consistently read very lean. At idle the AFR's would be 20.0:1 or higher.

If I had the ECU running in closed-loop, the oxygen sensor trimmings would have eventually maxxed out (on the enrichening side).

I got the cat put in the other day and had to run open header to the muffler shop again. This time, I wasn't too worried about the backfire (more worried about cops). After everyting was done I reseted the ecu and the check engine light went away.

Now I have to schedule a dyno at torque freaks while they still have the $29 baseline special
