timing belt tension affect performance?
like the title says, does the tension of the timing belt affect performance at all? mine is not too tight and not too loose...but i'm curious if i should tighten it up a little. thanks.
Well if it's too tight, it can rip apart under a good amount of force (dropping the clutch from a high RPM, taking it up to redline a lot, downshifting and allowing the engine to rev pretty high, etc...). If it's too loose, you can skip a tooth or 2 and THAT will affect performance since you will be either too advanced or too retarded. Serious bogging.
What's the spec's on deflection for the timing belt? I looked through my auto repair manual and didn't find anything. I believe that mine is too lose! I'm looking into replacing it but I need to know how tight it's supposed to be.
My buddy is a honda technician and he taught me... I count back three teeth and then tighten. turn over the motor and check it. Mine is pretty tight like 1/4 inch deflection. I rev to 9200k and no problem....
