Default Design problem for H22 into EF - input any one?

I'm currently designing the H22 mount kit for the EF bodies and I've run into a little bit of a dilemma. As everyone knows the H22 engine is much taller than the D or B series motor. The question is, how much ground clearance do I want to give the H22.

Here are the two choices:
1) Put the H22 up to the top of an SiR style hood. (to put it under a stock hood is way too low)That would mean that you could buy a Fiber Images or equivalent SiR style hood and be able to shut it, but the engine would hang a good 2 inches lower than a B-series. Well below even an after market crossmember.

2) Or... I could do what I did with the new K series mount kit I just designed for the EF body. I can give the engine good ground clearance and make people do something about a hood. Although if I do that, a possible hood solution is to design a hood that would cover both the K and H series engines in the EF.

Hmm, your opinions please....

There are some other people who are making both the D and B series adapter plates for the H series motor. We will make mounts to work with their plates, but in the mean time, we are going to make an H22 kit.

I say go with #2 that seems like the only reasonable way to do it.
I would rather have ground clearence then a stock hood.
But what do I care cause you said thats what you did to the K kit and thats the one I wil be using

I'd say option #2 would be the best way to do it.

Otherwise you're going to have punk kids blaming them blowing a hole in an oil pan on you guys

option 2 is good because if someone is gonna go H22 in an EF, then they want to go fast and most likely would get an aftermarket hood anyways

Call up Autolink Motorworks in Temple City. Their mechanic "Dr Charles" was one of the first known persons to swap an H22 into a crx back in 97-98.

I'm not going to mount it as low as Madrid did.

Choice 2 is good because if you do choice one and it is 2 inches lower than a b series swap there is going be very little ground clearance if the car is lowered.

Brian,

The only axis of change would be verticle no? Why not have an option for both. While people with money could go for the new custom hood route and people on more of a budget could go w/ a lower mount engine.

option 1. A mount kit as stated in your first post, with the engine a little low.

option 2. use option 1 mounts w/ shims and longer bolts to bring the engine up?

just an idea

id say that is the best idea.

However, if people are already going to need an SiR style hood, they can just buy an SiR+ style hood with more clearance.

Just my .02 cents

I think the biggest issue with the H series is the tranny, I would focus on adapter plate!!!

I dont know about you guys but my area ******* sucks.

Im loweerred 1.5" and I still bottom out my header on some roads with a zc motor

I personally would only buy the kit if it came with descent ground clearance and a hood was designed to fit

Either way I would be buying a new hood and ground clearance is important to me so I say #2.

You could shim an engine down, not up. So it would have to be the other way around.

Anyway, I guess that settles it, I'm goin to put it up. If possible, I'll make a design that could be shimmed down.

how about choice #1 with the K series instead of H series?

I'll see if I can make the K-kit so that you can shim it down. Most everyone I've talked to has no interest in using the cast aluminum oil pan to plow snow, speed bumps, rocks, or pavement.

i understand.
i think most want to drive on the city streets.
my ef9 will be a track only/trailer queen.
so im not too worried about speedbumps or steep driveways.

1. i have a SiR cf hood
2. gut the inner hood webbing
3. custom mount the motor a bit lower...just enough.
4. do the "jdm style" hood prop (near the windshield) for extra clearance.

i'm hoping the combination of these 4 things will make everything ok.
hopefully a berm at buttonwillow will still miss the oil pan when i go off.

what do you think sir?

Sounds like a plan, build yourself a little aluminum skid plate too.

hang it low. if youve already got a h22 in your EF most likely its not a daily driver.

I'd go #2. Wouldn't wanna damage a h22, heck my b series oil pan is low enough already, I couldn't imagine any lower and not be scared to go over big bumps, etc.
/\ for street DD status, #1 for those who want best axle positioning
