8.5:1 headgasket v.s. OEM material 8.5:1 cast pistons
Hi guys...
I am hyundai owner and have a question for ya. I would really appreciate the help, after being on the board for a while i see you guys are really knowledgble!
I am debating using OEM material 8.5:1 pistons or 8.5:1 thicker head gasket.
I understand that legnthening the cylinder will mess with squich volume and lessen the turbulence of the compressed air. but will this really effect me ?? I am only shooting for 220 WHP max for now. nothing crazy.
Another I have reasearch... some have found a larger hear gasket to become a source of preignition. Have any of you found this to be true? I am running a t28 turbo with a Spearco 17x6x3 race core.

i think youll be ok using either one...id try the head gasket first, and if something goes wrong, then tear the motor apart
i have a thicker gasket (only .043 cometic) and i havent had any detonation problems so far, tuning is the key
Ive run a thicker headgasket before. They do the job, might not be the "best" solution but do get the job done. Depending on how much thicker it is, you might need to invest in cam gears to put the cam timing back to what its supposted to be. Raising the head will through off timing.

I dont think for the power u r trying to make the loss of quench area is going to be a big deal. Is there a good quench area on the hyundai motor anyways?

Depends on the height of the head gasket. Think about it this way, lets say you install a 3mm headgasket, and the stock headgasket is .50mm thick. So the head sits 2.5mm higher on the block. So pull your timing belt 2.5mm in whatever way the motor rotates and walla you have how much your timing will be off. 2.5mm is almost maybe 1/3 a tooth on a timing belt (just guessing here).

I believe the rule on our Honda engines is 1 degree of timing for every .012" Shave the head and timing is retarded, raise the head (thicker gasket) and timing is advanced. That is on a Honda motor though, yours is likely reversed due to the rotation difference.

I have 10:1 comp so 8.5:1 is a decent thickness.

You've listed 2 cons for the headgasket and 0 for the pistons....
So why aren't you going with the pistons?
How are you addressing fueling/timing?
Since it seems put together from your pics, is it actually up and running?

yep... it is up and running...
as you can imagine aftermarket for hyundais isnt all that great. I have 290 cc injectors in right now from a sonata.... running 4 lbs...
I just ordered 380cc's from Korea last week.. so they will be here soon..
I am using SAFC II and MSD Dis II.
I prefer the head gasket for right now because I have never built an engine before. so for me... if the headgasket is on neglagble difference in safety I would rather do that.
I am attending UTI this comming year so mabie by then I will be ready to get some forged internals and go for the gold. But that is in the future... it is my daily driver.. so I am not looking for a 300 WHP monster.

Hey there... the turbo I chose to develope my kit with is a garrett t28.
.49 exhaust .80 comp.
2.0 and 6750 redline... it is the BETA II engine. silimar to older tiburons but now with a MAP sensor insted of MAF.
