changing valve springs, what spring compressor do you use?
changing out my valve springs and i need to get a spring compressor, what style is best to use? there are about three different ones out there. A c-clamp sytle, one with a **** that you tighten down, some lever one that you have to bolt to the head, and one thats like a pair of pliers that you squeeze. thanks
The snap-on is what you are looking for. I assume you are using the air pressure method to hold the valves in. Just a tip- use a magnetic parts retriever to grab the keepers as you push down on the retainer/spring to release them. And bee sure to plug the hles in the head with papor toweld so that yo do not lose any parts which may drop. It is really not a hard job. Have fun!
Hi Guys,
Does anyone have some pics of the Snap-On valve compressor being used? I went to the Snap-On site and it wasn't clear how it works.
A written explanation would be cool too!
Just wondering if I could make one in my shop.
Thank you,
John

BTW, if you are going to change valve springs while the head is on the block, you need to put compressed air in the cylinder to hold the valves closed. This will keep the valves from dropping.
Lisle Corporation makes a nice little hose set-up, called a "Valve Holder", part number 19700, that threads into the sparkplug hole. It sells for approximately $13.

Is there a reason why this can't be done?
Regards,
Why not bring the piston up to TDC and let the valves sit on the piston? It means you have to work on two pistons at a time but I don't see that as a problem.

How the hell are you supposed to press the spring?! what Snap on tool are you talking about?snap on lists only 3 removal tools.ya9140 ya3271 s6121 and cg90 i see a picture but damn thats too close to make out what it is. looks like a ya9140 to me?
In the picture you dont see that the part touching the retainer is actually a handle, you press down on it and it compresses the spring. The tool would look like the piece in the picture, one long rod, two "A" or house shaped brackets, and some bolts. A tip when using this tool is to put zip ties on the ends of the rods so it wont slide back and forth while you are trying to compress the spring.
