Broken timing belt damaed the engine
Hey guys
here is what happened...
the timing Belt got broken in my 92 prelude SI.. well, i'm not in my city.. and i took the poor thing to the honda dealership..
He told me u have broken timing belt..."99% of the cases nothing would happen to the engine.. and in 1% it would cause damage" he said there is no way to tell if any damage happened to the engine without replacing the TB...
he asked for $700, (i asked aroound and the next cheapest was $550, and it would cost 85$ to pay the dealership for the diagnosis, so i figured it would be almost the same).... and i told him to go ahead...
today he called me ad said that the broken TB did actualy damage the engine... and i have to replace it..... he said i found u a used one and it would cost u $3700(replace the engine) + 700( the labor to replace the old TB)....
if i'm
what should i do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1)take his offer (and pay $4400 for a car that worth $3000 in good shape) ...
2) get him a used engine... (the cheapest i found so far in the market would cost me 1000)
3)pay him the 700$ and two the car away..
4) don't pay nothing and try to make a deal with him to take the car for the 700$....
please advise.. and what would u do.....

to test for damage you do a compression check....you probably just bent some valves...there's no need to replace the engine unless you get more information first. If you just need to replace some head parts you can put it back together. That being said it may be smarter to do an H22a swap now to make your money work better for you.
However 3700 for an engine is ridiculous the guy is fucing you around a JDM swap motor tranny ecu is like 2500...you could get a longblock for less (no tranny) and keep your h23 tranny.
I don't understand what the $700 is for...

Please!
Take the head off yourself and take it to a good shop and just have them look at it and see what's up. The bottom end is probably not damaged...

wow wtf $700? how could it come out to that even with stealership prices. Do yourself a favor and take it somewhere else. I would NOT pay that.

NO!@ Get that car out of there! tow it, whatever, every minute it sits there is more of your money potentially stolen.

Smartest thing said. Before I started getting hook ups on Honda parts I would have felt the same way you do. But relax look around if the valves are bent thats much less expensive than replacing the whole motor. I miss shifted from 4th to 1st in my old GSR and bent everything. But the bottom end was fine replaced the valves and she was fine.
Don't stress out but as Satan_srv said you probably can upgrade to a stronger motor for less than what the dealer was quoting you for a stock one.
Do your homework so you don't get taken to school.

DUDE!!!! $700 is like taking it in the butt.....WITH NO KY-JELLY!!!......get you car out of there...no freaking way is that worth $700. as someone said you might be able to get away with replacing the head...that's a nice does it yourselfer to learn from...but do lots of home-work....
didn't get a response in my other thread, so I'll ask here - how often does a broken timing belt result in a busted bottom end?

if it breaks while traveling at a normal speed it will probably take some valves with it. More often than not a broken timing belt will take some valves. There's probably a lot more stress on the timing belt at higher rpms, so it will usually snap when you are up in the rev range which is where you DONT want it to break. If it broke at idle, you'd be one luck sob.

From what I've seen it depends on alot of factors most of the time I would say just valves bent but there have been some motors that Ive seen that self destructed when valves BROKE. You won't know unless you do some testing. Try compression testing or leak down and see how it comes out.
Hey I will sell you my Engine out of my 97 Honda Accord. Runs excellent... $250.00 with engine and ecu and transmission. Great Deal!!! I am located in Florida though so you will have to pay shipping which is probably 150-200 dollers. Also if you want I will sell just the engine for 150.
yea, its really rare for a broken timing belt to really damage a piston. If you completly snapped the valve head off, it will bounce around the compression chamber for a bit before melting to the top of the piston and probably cause some wall scaring. no fun.
You could get a head with probably brand new vavles/springs/retainers for that $700 the dealer is robbing you of. As stated before, shoot for a JDM h22. 1200 bucks is the lowest ive seen for just the motor. good luck, and tell the dealership they are on drugs.

defintiely pull ur car out if its just valves do it urself all the work pull the head and everything but the people already pulled the head rite go down and c the damages find out what exactly need replacement. valves highly doubt pistons and cylinder walls are f'd but it could be.
They did put the new timing belt on the bad engine( that's how the figured out that it was bad0 and now he wants his F$700...
i was basically cheated on by the dealership!!!!!!!!!!!.....
I was Mislead....
He said "in 99% of the cases nothing would happen to the engine... and there is no way to tell if the anything is messes up without replacing the TB and firning the engine UP"..............
and both of those statements are false.....
Should i pay the sob his money.....

I would tell him to get the thing fixed pay him his money and leave or take him to court stating you wanted what you wanted done. He said the engine would work now it still doesnt work and he wants his money if hes ase certified and he has the ase green plaque on the side of his shop stating that you can somewhat screw him.
He would have to either replace the belt or take the head off to see if there's any damage. Just tell him you'll pay him a FAIR price for a timing belt change and get the **** out of there.
$700 for a timing belt change is outrageous. I got mine put on for free when I was doing a swap since the engine was out of the car for a while. You should be able to do the same, I mean, if you are going to replace the whole engine, replacing the belt should take almost no effort at all.
1) They always get you for the $85 diag.
2) $700 is too much to have paid for the TB change.
3) $3700 is too much to pay for a used engine.
Get a dealer manual and used cylinder head ($500), and swap yourself.
