Snow chain suggestions
So boarding season is upon us, and as much as I dont want to, I know I will be driving my Teg up to the snow this winter. What type of chins do people use? Ideally I should probably buy some beater wheels w/ big cushy snow tires. Whats the cheapest option for that? Mabey some stock steel 15in civic rims?
I would get 13" or 14" steelies and some snow tires or even some rally tires. Civics and Integras can work great in the Snow. Ask any of the DFH people from Boston and they can tell you what works great.
If you really need chains a 4x4 would probably be the best option.
I see you're from Los Gatos. I suppose you're going to stay on the main (plowed) roads in Tahoe? Just keep using your all-season tires and don't bother with snow tires. When the roads are bad enough that you're having traction problems, you're going to be required to put on chains anyways.
Any kind of chain will do. The better ones are the ones are the link-type that zig-zag. The next best are the link chains that go straight across. The longest-lasting but poorest traction ones are the cable type.

Do what I did, rent a 4x4 and get everyone to chip in to pay for it. The Truckee area mountains are the worst! I saw people even with chains spin. You'll need to get some type of chain, any will do. They all break eventually. Just get them before you go or you'll get ***-raped by the people that sell them on the side of the roads when you're already in the mountains! And learn how to install them yourself. Bring gloves! Plus you have to go through check points and if you don't have them they won't let you pass.
But the best advice to give you is drive slowly and safely. It took me 2 hours to get from Reno to Boreal, that's about 30 miles! Traffic sucks! Took a total of 6 hours to get from Reno to Daly City! Only took us 3 hours to get up there!

I've been thinking about this lately too..
But would 13" steelies be a good option with its 165mm width? The last thing i want to do i scratch up my rims.. So I figured if I did it, I'd use 14" EX takeoffs that I have, so at least I get a little more contact patch.. What do u guys think about that?

Buy some 14" steelies and wrap em with Bridgestone Blizzaks.
My teg is Saaa-wheeeeeeeet in the snow. Its the best handling car I've ever had in the snow - the snow tires make a HUGE difference though. I've had lots of cars including a skyhawk, s10, sunbird, mustang, probe, talon (awd), civic and some others I cant remember right now.
I love driving along watching all the SUVs slide off the road and crash into ditches.
