Default How long a stock Engine will last?

Does anyone know if lets say I get a 96-00 Civic in that range and it has close to 100+ on the original motor or a bit more miles on it if it is worth it?

I have around 4,000-5,000 max to spend and my heart is set on an Acura teggie or a Civic... Mainly the Civic. I know the engines tend to get to 200k if maintained right. I am just wondering if I will have to be doing a lot of maintanence, thanks.

*Would post for WTB in classifieds but I can't since I am a trial user right now. I am located in Michigan.

Dude, don't even worry about it if you check everything out and it's all good... You can always do a cheap motor swap if something goes wrong... d-series motors are a dime a dozen!

If you change the oil regularly, and perform the routine maintenance, you should get A LOT of life out of a civic motor. My friend has a 96 DX that he uses for his daily driver back and forth to work almost 200 miles a day. It's got 300K on the original motor, and it still runs great.

it's all a matter of whether or not the car was taken care of or not.

Indeed, if romped on, it won't last 20k. But if it was taken care of, babied, routine maintenence, etc...etc...etc...these motors will last to 300k or more.

the more you take care of it (oil change, maintenance, etc.), the longer it last...that's all to it.

Yea see my problem is I don't know mechanics well and an engine swap would be hard for me, near impossible with my knowledge.

If the car has had one owner and paint and everything looks brand new then it was taken car of.. So think just regular oil changes and so what will give me atleast 50 thousand more miles?

My car has 148,000 miles (d15b7) and I autocross at least 2 weekends a month. Never a problem. I burn about 1/2 quart of oil between changes. It's nothing to worry about and easily fixed.

I had about 342,000 Miles on my D15B7 before I swap it out.

They last pretty long, if you do all the regular maint.

Well I probably won't be racing so I will leave in the stock VTECH engine. Just do some interior mods and add some aftermarket rear lights *euros* nothing big.. So I really just need to know if it is worth it to buy a 96-99 Civic that has in the 100K miles on the stock engine for the 4 grand - 5 grand money mark... Or if I should just buy a ford POS like a contour for the same price for like a 2000 contour with 60 K miles on it???

If reliablilty is a big deal to you, get the honda.
I would rather buy a 200K mile civic than a 60K mile contour.

If maintaned right, the biggest thing you will need to do is the timing belt.
Since the T belt and water pump should be replaced around 100k miles, make sure it's been done on the civic you want to purchase. If not tell them you want to deduct that from the price (a dealer will charge you around $500).

I've owned 2 hondas with close to 250K miles on them. Both only required regular maintenance(T belt, water pump, oil and fluid changes, spark plugs, cap and rotor, etc).

Don't waste your money on mods (ie. Euros) if you are going to have it as a daily driver, etc. You should go buy a compression tester and take it with you when you go look at the Civic and do a compression test. That way, you will have an idea of how well the motor is doing and what not. Incase you don't know much about compression tests, generally, the numbers should be within 10% of each other across all four cylinders. Good luck.

BTW, it's VTEC, not VTECH.

I didn't mean to add the "H" I know it is a VTEC.

And to Jim... I don't have the money to buy a damn Integra Type R. And I know you have all seen the thread with the 16 year old crashing his teggie... I get what your trying to say, that I can't drive or I am a noob.

Why do you have to be an ***? First of I can drive, I don't know much about mechanics though.

if you don't know much about mechanics, you can bring the car to a reputable shop and they can check it out for you, will cost you some money though. but it's worth the peace of mind, imo.

put it to you this way. my mom's 99 LX has 266,000 DELIVERY miles on it. hardly uses any oil, runs great. all the thing cares is that I change its oil every 3,000 miles or so. It practically can't be broken.

maybe he meant get a type-r MOTOR which you could for the amount of money you have, as stated buy a 92-95 with a blown motor, and put a gsr or type-r motor in and be a sleeper, it would be a lot of fun to drive and you still get the honda reliability
