how do u use a timing light to adjust the ignition timing on a d series motor? i have the timing gun justneed some instructions that are simple, pics wouldnt hurt either, thanks

quite easy:

turn on the car and timing gun. then aim at the timing marks on the pulley. at idle the white marks should be lining up with the pointer on the plastic timing belt cover, that is BTDC. Now adjust the timing gun to 16 degrees, it should make the red mark line up with the pointer. there is three red marks, you want the middle one which is 16 degrees TDC. the one on the left is 14 degree TDC and the one on the right is 18 degree TDC.

if the middle red mark doesn't line up with the pointer on the plastic cover, you will need to loosen the adjusting bolts on the distrubitor. now depending on your situation, for example the red mark is at 18 degree TDC you will need to retard the ignition timing on the distrubitor by pulling the distubitor towards the front of the car. keep pulling it until the 16 degree TDC red mark lines up with the pointer on the plastic cover. you will need to do the same thing if the red mark is at 14 degree TDC or less BUT instead of pulling the distrubitor towards you, you will need to push it towards the firewall, that is advancing the ignition timing.

see that's pretty easy if you know what you're doing.

remember to reset the computer to clear any check engine light that may come on which I doubt will occur.

 

where exactly do i point the light? i knew about moving the dizzy but i need it exact, how like, do i hold the gun still it doesnt make much since that i hold a light to a pully and it somehow flashes right but ill prolly get it once i do it, o and my timing light is the cheap one that doesnt really adjust ne thing i dont thnk, its just a light

reread my post, you aim at the white marks on the crankshaft pulley. go to summitracing.com for a decent timing gun. that's where I got my timing gun $110. it also comes with a built-in tachometer too can't beat that

if you don't know what you are doing I HIGHLY recommend going to a shop(ignition timing and camshaft timing is not something a beginner/shadetree should mess around with) and let them do it and watch them do it.

 

You also need to make sure that your car is normal operating temperature and all of your electrical stuff is off (radio, A/C, etc.)

Don't you also need to jump the ECU connector before you set the timing?

 

I can barely see the crank pulley, let alone the tiny marks on it while its spinning.

that's why you clean the crank pulley BEFORE you use the timing gun. also it would make common sense to remark the red and white marks with red & white paint. I just used a little bit of red touch up paint and plain ol' white out(you know stuff you used for making corrections on paper)

Yes, or else the ECU will try to adjust itself.
