did you recently replace or unplug from battery terminal? or reset the ECU by pulling the fuse out?

because the ECU must 're-learn' and go through its self test of the emissions components (part of the OBDII functional check of the smog '96 model year and newer)... which is now required on all smog inspections.... if one of the above has been done....and to remedy it, you will most likely need to drive it around for a couple of days and complete its 'trip' cycle....

yea, i just got the car start not to long ago. got it back fro mthe auctio nthe battery was dead. the car wasnt on for couple of days after i changed the battery. the problem is that i cant drive it around. not registered or insurened so i have that problem. thats for the help

 

then for sure you'll need to drive it around .... freeway, here 'n there, just like normal.... *break it in* if its been sittin for awhile.

too bad you're not in SoCal... i coulda checked it out for you. i work at a Test Only.

cant really guarantee it... but i would suggest really really driving it around... its a whole process with this OBDII system, gotta be patient with them.

no worries, its actually the fun part, cuz you could find out if any other problems that could come up. run it high, hell, redline it if you want to ... but it could take days to complete its 'self test'. ask the tech at the smog shop if he could hook up his smog machine to read what they call 'readiness monitors' before he runs the inspection.... if the tech is cool, some are just $hietheads and wont do it. Tip: must have at least "6" COMPLETED monitors in order to pass the OBDII funtional test(or MIL, whichever they call it) i could recite the whole damn inspection manual verbatum if i wanted to.... anyways.
