damn that sucks. You bought that rooftop panel for nothing once you found out it was not worth it to install it due to the condition it was in. Going to the junkyard and removing that part from a rex or you gonna order it new?

Why are you doing it? Just tired of the sunroof leaking? Wanting a different look? Did you do anything other than remove the old skin to put a new one on?

I autocross the car and it's my daily driver. Yes, I know there have been some discussions about the legality of re-skinning the roof in CSP. I only race localy and I've disscused this with the locals that I race against and they're all fine with it.

At 6'7" headroom is at a premium in this car. Especially when I'm Auto-xing and wearing a helmet. Loosing the sunroof and related components gives me an extra 1/2" or so.

Also, the old sunroof was starting to have some rust problems.

And yes, this is going to give me a 30lb weight reduction and slightly lower my center of gravity.

I never drive with the roof open because I have a hard time seeing the road with the sun comming down into my eyes. It's usually raining here anyway.

Well, I'm also replacing the windsheild and seal now that I shattered it trying to remove it.

Live and learn I guess. By the time this project is over, it looks like I'll be dumping a grand total of about $380 into it. but hopefully I can get some of that back by selling my sunroof parts. (anyone have a DX that they want to install a factory sunroof on?)

A friend of mine called in a favor to a local junkyard and got me another roof for $50 (they originally wanted $125) they're giving me the entire roof cut at the pillars so it won't warp in transit.

 

why didnt you just get a CF plug for the sunroof hole? woulda saved you a shitload of time wouldnt it?

awww i first saw it and imediatly thaught you had gotten that glass top that was on ebay a few weeks ago. i wanted that thing but couldnt afford it.

 

I'm planning on doing the same sort of thing on my 89 Si Hatchback ("no, it's not an Si. All Si's had sunroofs!")

I do however have a question for you;

After looking through the factory body manual, it seems like you could retain the original front and rear inner cross-members. By doing this, you would be able to not worry about the body sagging during the process.

the re-skinned roof looks much cleaner, also the SCCA rules are very clear about not using sunroof plugs in CSP, not so clear about re-skinning. (there has been debates in RR/AX about this, general consensus is you can't do either but some are still ok with re-skinning which is why I went that route.

The body is holding really strong without the roof, I've got the roof set in place right now just in case, but it's really rigid without it. You could temporarily weld a couple of braces to hold everything true.

how much did you pay for the roof skin?

The one I got from eBay cost me apx $85. I thought it was going to be a good deal because my local yard quoted me $125. When we realized how thrashed this skin was, my friend called in a big favor that one of the wrecking yard guys owed him and got them down to $50 for their good skin. So I guess you can say I'm spending $135 for the roof, $125 for a new windshield, and $50 for the winshield seal. plus paint.
