What can I use to clean rust on aftermarket shocks?

If the threads have surface rust, what can I use to clean it safely?

spray generously with WD40 or some other petroleum based spray and clean them with a very fine grade wire brush (can be bought at any good hardware store)

seriously, a wirebruss attachment on a drill, and then repaint it.
