use either a carpet cleaner or emulsifier in a spray bottles, let it sit and then vacuum it off using a soft brush tip on the hose end

use a very soft brush and fill a clean spray bottle with 6:1 woolite. You can also use this for cleaning your mats and carpets. For heavy dirt and build up, adgitate with a clean terry (you may need many) after scrubing the solution in with your brush. You will be amazed with the results. Be sure to use a very soft brisile brush to use on te headliner as it is much more delicate then carpets of mats. I also suggest doing a light rinse (light as possible) with a spray bottle of water, wet dry vac that off or use a clean terry.
Go to autopia.org and post there about the question in the "autopian university" for as much help as you will ever need cleaning your car in every aspect (especially paint).

Dilute Castrol Super Clean quite a bit, then wipe the headliner with a sponge, lightly scrubbing where necessary. Wear gloves, castrol super clean is bad for your hands.

A rag w/ water then dry rag to dry it. Thats all you really need unless theres like dirt IN the headliner...
