i'm not sure if the 2nd pic is polished. looks like he just sprayed aircraft remover to take off the paint. if you wanna do it yourself it'll take a damn long time. after the paint is off sand it down with 1000 or 2000 grit and use a polish compound afterwards.
yeah, it takes hella long to polish it yourself. Start w/ a real course paper then work your way down. I'd wet sand it. You'll never be able to do it in one sitting, your damn arm will fall off. I though about buying a second one and just working on it like a couple hours a week until I was done.

i may be wrong... but the first one looks polished and then chromed to me... the second is polished... but i took that picture when the motor was going in so no one was really paying attention to see if the valve cover was polished or not
Right, ek9t. The 1st one looks like triple plated chrome (normal finish, every shop does this. Just look for the better buy.) And, the other v.c. appears to be hand-polished. At any rate, if you wish to do it yourself all you have to do is go to Sears, buy a good rotary tool (very useful tool for other stuff) and get a polishing kit. For sure, that will cost less than $100 depending on the quality of the Dremel (rotary tool).
try a powdercoating
i found a couple
went to yahoo.com, check the yellow pages, and found one 2miles away from my crib, but i just did my own work to practice and help my friends polish stuff

If u wanna just take the black stuff off of your valve cover you can use JASCO or any other strong paint thinner. My cousin did it on his old ZC valve cover and we did the same thing to my uncle's GSR valve cover. You can buy that stuff at like home depot. It wont give you a "polished" look, but rather just a plain silver greyish look. Sorry I have no pix.

I did mine my self, can send pics if you want, the basic, is to first remove all paint, usine, thinner, brake cleener, or oother strong thing, then sand it up with 1000, then goes in lower range of paper, like 2000, or 1500, then get on compound, and RUB LIKE HELL!!!, after, just, put a gentle coat of clear onit to avoid aluminium oxidation!!! tadam,
