powder coat it, spray paint will flake off. It you want it to look stock and you are going to spray paint it anyways look for wrinkle paint.

You can use engine enamel from wal mart. Supposed to be heat resistant up to 500 degrees. That and its made to put on the engine block. I am doing my valve cover right now.

just spray off the old crap with aircraft remover... then 500 degree paint is plenty for a valve cover. dont coat it on too thick, if you do it will crack.

500 dgree engine enamel + 500 degree clear coat = bling valve cover for less than 10 bucks.

1.)Strip old paint off with Aircraft Remover
2.)Stand and clean the surface
3.)Mask off all areas that you don't want painted (oil cap hole, spark plug holes...)
4.)Use a high temp primer (Duplicolor, VHT, Plasticote) and give the valve cover a few coats of primer (I did 2 or 3 coats)
5.)Use a wrinkle paint (I used either Duplicolor or Plasticote, I can't remember) and apply as instructed on the can. For best results use a hair dryer or do it out in the hot sun to help wrinkle/cure the paint.

You can buy the paints at Pep Boys or Autozone. *Prepping the surface is the most important part of the process. If you do not spend a lot of time on this, the paint will crack, chip, or just plain turn out looking like **** if you do not do it properly (I learned that the hard way my first time).

I followed these steps and my valve cover turned out flawless. I don't have any pics that I can post b/c they are print film and I don't want to go to school to scan them.

Good Luck

Remove your valve cover and while your at it go ahead and buy a new valve cover seal.

Buy some aircraft remover or auto strip from ANY parts store for under $4.00

Spray air craft remover on the paint that you want off and get a tooth brush and scrub really hard and keep spraying and let it sit some also.

Then use some simple green to clean the greasy surface.

Next get you some 2000 grit sand paper and scuff the surface

-----------------------------

Buy some VHT wrinkle paint from any parts store
Paint is available in red & black

Lay on thick coats and let it dry 5 minutes between coats for an excellent job.

you can sand off the paint from the raised letters.

if you tape it you can just lay tape over and exact-o knife the excess off.

What color is a B16A valve color under the paint, I was under the impression it's just metallic lookin'. After taking the black powdercoat paint off my CBR rim's to reveal the silver shine I was thinkin' of doing the same to the B16A valve cover, go for the natural look, can I leave it unpainted, maybe clearcoat for protection, do B16s run any hotter than D16s? Does paint act as any sort of insulator? My D16 currently in the car, weeks away from swap, has an upainted valve cover and it has no ill effects on the hood's paint.
