change rings and rod bearings by removing head?
i have a b18b motor and i was wondering if i could replace the rings and rod bearings by just removing the head and accessing it from there. no need to take out the motor just to do that right?
Not really, you'd have to go from the bottom either way.
Removing the head just makes things a little easier.

You will have to remove the oil pan to remove the caps on the top of the rods anyways.
You also need to be able to read the crank codes and rod codes, then match them up with the chart in the Helms manual to find your bearing colors. Otherwise you'll be installing bearings that are possibly not in spec.

so in other words... i cant replace the rod bearings without takin the motor out right?
can i at least replace the rings by just removing the head?

YEP. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU DO... All you gotta do is take the head off (like 4 bolts, they're 3/8" bolts too) And once that's off, you put a chef's hat on and get a wooden spoon, and you put the new piston rings around the spoon, and jam the spoon down in cylinder number 1 at 180° BTDC and stir it up like you're making chicken soup and then you try to make your best Muppet Show Chef voice and say: "GURRRDY GURRRDY GURRRDY". I've also heard that saying: "Let's kick it up a notch... BAM!" will help the rings seat better than the Muppet Show voice.
Hope that helps!

Lol sorry... Guess that was pretty bad.
to me.
Well with that said, Here's what ya do buddy... Take the head off... Drop the oil pan, and take a look at whatever you're wanting to see... I mean... most b18b's aren't that awful old... So unless it's been beaten a lot, it's not really worth it to change them out... like... Have you done a comp. test? That would give you a general idea of the overall health of the engine. Then, if that shows up bad, then you do a leakdown. To see whether it's valves, rings, headgasket, whatever...
But if you're just wanting to get fresh parts in the motor and it's not going to see god-awful nasty track time, imo, it's not worth it.
Just some thoughts. Sorry for making fun.

Oh yea, and btw, when u get the pan off, there's gonna be an oil pump pickup, and a "windage tray" (big piece of metal covering the main caps and such) just take them off too, be sure to use a new gasket on anything that had one before. (i.e. oil pump pickup, oilpan gasket, oil plug o-ring type deal)

aut0tek... that was some idiotic reply you posted there and i don't see whats so funny about. just reminds of the other idiots on this forum who should've been banned along time ago.
thanks to the other two who replied above... good to see we still have mature members in these forums who believe that idiotic posts are not funny and a waste of bandwidth.
thanks for the clarification anyway, aut0tek.

Yea mang, you're totally right... I apologize.
I dunno, sometimes I just assume people can just "see" what doesn't make sense... Not to offend you or anything, but the piston rings go around the piston, therefore, you would need to take it out of the cylinder far enough to get the rings off... which would require taking the rod caps loose.
Once again, my bad... Sorry... And you're right... it wasn't that funny.
I'll try to be more helpful with any following questions ya got tho!

its cool, i know what you mean.
i wanted to make sure i was understanding it right. when my friend said he can replace the rings by removing the head ONLY, i was questioning that.
